The Righteous Spirit: Unveiling the Hongik Ideology and its Philosophical Foundations

This excerpt from an interview with Huh Kyung-young on “Huh Kyung-young TV” delves into the concept of a “sound mind” and the core spiritual values of the Korean people. Huh Kyung-young explains how traditional virtues, the principle of Hongik Ingan (benefiting all humanity), and the concept of Cheonjiin (heaven, earth, and humanity) are interconnected, forming a comprehensive philosophical framework for a righteous life. these values are not isolated but rather form a complex equation that must be understood holistically.

The Essence of a Sound Mind

The Joy of Understanding Nature’s Principles
a sound mind comes from understanding the principles of nature. He contrasts this with a mindset focused on sadness and impossibility, highlighting that only a tiny fraction of people truly grasp this joyful perspective. This perspective allows individuals to challenge the impossible, much like Elon Musk’s vision for Mars.

The self must be judged by the principles of nature. If one realizes the principles of the universe, one is always joyful. It’s not sadness. 99.9% of people are like this (sad). Only 0.1% are like this (joyful). And this 0.1% leads the world. For example, if someone wants to go to Mars, people think Mars is 150 degrees hot. So these people don’t think about Mars. But Musk wants to go to Mars. He’s challenging the impossible. So that person has joy.

The Eight Virtues and Four Spices of the Korean People
Huh Kyung-young outlines the eight traditional virtues of the Korean people: filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, trustworthiness, propriety, righteousness, integrity, and humility. He then introduces four “spices”—sincerity, trust, love, and propriety—that must be integrated into each of these virtues for them to be complete. Without these “spices,” the virtues are hollow and cannot lead to true blessings.

Our people first value filial piety. Then, fraternal affection. Then loyalty. That’s the third. this is filial piety and fraternal affection towards one’s parents. Then what is this? Loyalty to the country. Then, trust. Then, propriety. Oh. Now, integrity. what our people actually possess is benevolence. we have filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, trust—this is also religion. this trust, reliability, religion would also be included here. Then, the propriety of human life. Then, righteousness. And what we call humility and integrity. This integrity and shame, this is shame. This is humility, and so on. these eight things are the spirit of our people.

Can there be filial piety without sincerity? No, there cannot. That won’t do. Right. Our mothers and fathers pray at dawn with a bowl of water by the Jangdokdae (traditional Korean condiment jars). That’s sincerity. rather than just bathing and praying with water, the integrity of filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, and trustworthiness must be based on sincerity, trust, love, and propriety. these four things are all applied here. to this itself. Trust also requires sincerity and this. What kind of rule? All these “spices” go in here. if you observe propriety here but lack sincerity. Isn’t that so? If you observe propriety but lack trust. that wouldn’t be proper, would it? Oh. If I strictly observe propriety towards those people, there must be trust that they are human. You’re right. Love must be included there. Can it be done without love in each of these actions? No, it cannot. It cannot be. these four “spices” complement the eight virtues.

The Philosophy of Hongik Ingan

Hongik Ingan as the Ultimate Korean Spirit
Hongik Ingan (benefiting all humanity) is the original moral code and core ideology of the Korean people, encompassing all eight virtues. He explains that the term “Hongik” itself, derived from the Chinese character for “great bow,” signifies the Korean people’s historical identity as the “Dongyi (Eastern Bowmen)”—a people who use a great bow for the benefit of all humanity, not for selfish gain or conquest.

This is the original ideology of our people: Hongik. It’s Hongik. Hongik. The Hongik ideology is the original moral code of our people. It means to widely bestow upon others in the world. If you delve deeply into the Hongik ideology, it’s this: filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, trustworthiness, propriety, righteousness, integrity, and humility. See? It’s all about being good to others. we shorten this to Hongik. we call it the Hongik ideology. It can also be called the Hongik philosophy or the Hongik concept. we are to practice “Jaese Iwha” (governing the world and harmonizing the people) with this Hongik philosophy. With this, we establish human systems and harmonize the world, practicing “Jaese Iwha.” what is that spirit? It’s Hongik. we are a people formed by the Hongik ideology, which can be both a philosophy and an ideology. It can also be the Hongik ideology. but other peoples don’t have this. What Dangun presented to us with Hongik is to widely and greatly benefit others. It’s not about me becoming greatly successful. It’s about doing things greatly. Adding. It’s the character for “add.” widely embrace others. Give more. our people are a people who use a great bow. What do the Chinese call us? Dongyi. They call us the Dongyi people. That’s Hongik. A people who use a great bow in the East. They use small bows, but Koreans draw a great bow. we are a great people. Hongik, this is a bow. It’s a bowstring. We hold a great bow. See? This is a bow. This is the character for “bow.” A person is holding a bow with their hand. this is Hongik. we are a people with a great bow. We are not a people who run around with small crossbows. the character for “great bow” is here. this is pulling. This is a person. It really looks like a person. A person is kneeling, drawing a bow, and aiming at the target. This is the great character Hong for Hongik. our Korean people are a people who hold a great bow. That’s why the Chinese call us, what did they say earlier? Dongyi people. Dongyi people. That’s the Hongik people. Dongyi, understood? The character “Yi” in Dongyi refers to the bow. the East, the East, the East is a people who hold a great bow. A great bow. oh, this is the Dongyi people. so the bow stands firmly before our national ideology. this bow means to shoot towards the target of “Yi” (benefit). we must shoot for the benefit of all people. If we only shoot for our own people, it’s war. Isn’t that so? a great bow doesn’t shoot at trivial things. aim the great bow for the benefit of all humanity. we don’t invade other countries for public good. isn’t that so? so the map of Korea also looks like a bow. Oh. this bow means we are a people with a great bow. We are the Dongyi people. But we must not use the bow for selfish purposes, but for the great benefit of all humanity, for the public good. We just don’t invade other countries. Hmm, this is it. This is the expanded version of filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, trustworthiness, propriety, righteousness, integrity, and humility. What goes into the essence of each of these? These must all be included in each one, and the sincerity, trust, love, and propriety, and the blessings and retribution I mentioned earlier, must all be intertwined in each one for it to be complete. That is the spirit of our people. when we invest in the spirit of our people, it’s Hongik. It’s the Hongik spirit. Right. Don’t shoot small, selfish bows. Use a great bow, but use it for the great common good. Oh. Well, I think this is enough to explain the virtues and spirit of the Korean people. The story of the “Daechamun” is also complicated. Talking about spirit is incredibly long. When a bow is shot, it goes far, doesn’t it? Benefit widely. Yes, when a bow is shot, you look at what’s in front of you and shoot the bow. It shoots far. it means “great.” Great. Hongik. this is Hongik.

The Interconnectedness of All Virtues: A Grand Equation
Huh Kyung-young describes the entire system of virtues, “spices,” and the Hongik ideology as a complex equation. these concepts are not isolated but are interconnected and multiplicative. For example, loyalty is not just blind obedience but must be tempered by the Hongik spirit, meaning one must speak up if a superior’s actions harm the greater good. This holistic understanding is crucial for truly grasping the “way of humanity.”

This Chinese character also requires good algebraic skills. You have to substitute the sincerity, trust, love, and propriety, and the blessings and retribution I mentioned earlier, into this equation. It’s all multiplication. This alone isn’t enough. If it’s filial piety, you might think it’s just filial piety towards your own parents. That’s not it. Can it be done if it’s just my siblings sticking together? No, it cannot. No. Filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, trustworthiness, propriety, righteousness, integrity, and humility are the spirit of our people, but broadly speaking, it’s the Hongik spirit. It’s the Hongik ideology and Hongik philosophy. But this must be included in each and every one, like loyalty. It’s not selfish loyalty. Going to one general and flattering him, that’s not loyalty. For the sake of the country, you must point out even a general’s mistakes. That’s Hongik. If my superior, whom I serve, is always gambling on trivial matters while there’s a war going on. Then what is this loyalty? Hongik is not included. In that case, you must say, “We are in the middle of a war right now, can we really be gambling?” Now you understand. this Hongik is a two-character abbreviation of our people’s eight virtues. This is the character for “bow.” This is a person shooting a bow. we, the Dongyi people, who hold a great bow, live for the great common good. Hongik means to greatly benefit others. What is this “Ye” (propriety)? Isn’t it about observing things for others? What is this “Ui” (righteousness)? Hmm? Righteousness. Everything, like a wedding, has a sequence and is logical. That’s righteousness. At that time, it refers to the four rites of passage. These things require propriety, the four rites of passage, and integrity. Isn’t that so? just saying filial piety, fraternal affection, loyalty, trustworthiness, propriety, righteousness, integrity, and humility, if this is not included, it cannot be our people’s spirit. Hongik must be included. And what else must be included there? I told you. Sincerity, trust, love, and propriety. Sincerity, trust, love, and propriety. this itself is an equation. Sincerity. Trust. Love. Propriety. if sincerity, trust, love, and propriety, and blessings and retribution are all included, then these four things, sincerity, trust, love, and propriety, must be included here and here, and everywhere. They must all be included, each one. And when they are all included, what do you call the completion of these eight virtues and these four things? Hongik. Hongik. You call it Hongik. This whole thing is Hongik, a person who shoots a great bow. You’ve got it. This person holding a great bow, using it to give greatly. This is for all people. Hongik. our Hongik ideology, Hongik philosophy, Hongik spirit, this is the main spiritual culture of our people. And this spiritual culture ultimately leads to the Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions. You know the Four Beginnings. The feeling of commiseration, the feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance, and the feeling of right and wrong. When you encounter these names, what emerges? The Four Beginnings emerge. But if Hongik is removed, in things that are not Hongik, there are only the Seven Emotions. These Seven Emotions are the problem. In the Hongik spirit, there are only the Four Beginnings. The feeling of commiseration, the feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance, and the feeling of right and wrong. Now, to look at others with commiseration. Isn’t that so? To look at others with commiseration. This feeling of commiseration is the first. From this feeling of commiseration, the feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance, and the feeling of right and wrong. There are four of them. If you change these four into other words, what are the feeling of commiseration, the feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance, and the feeling of right and wrong? They are the Four Beginnings. But if it’s the Four Beginnings, and you change them into other words, what is it? Isn’t it reason? It’s reason, but if you change it into other words, it’s benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom. It’s the Four Virtues. Although this is also a virtue, our people’s Hongik concept ultimately contains benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom. Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom. This is it. The feeling of commiseration. This is the feeling of shame and dislike. This is the feeling of deference and compliance. Deference is propriety. If you have something to eat, you give it to others, don’t you? You have to eat while observing propriety. If a grandchild eats before their grandfather when food arrives, that’s not propriety. what is this? Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom. Right. what did I say this was just now? The feeling of commiseration, the feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance, the feeling of right and wrong. Deference is propriety. if you’re sitting in a chair and someone who looks a little older than you comes, you should stand up and say, “Please sit.” And then you go to the seat next to them. If you go to an event and there’s a good seat, you should yield it. You should go and sit in a corner. But if a host comes and says, ” President Huh, please come here.” You should at least go and sit. If I go and sit in the middle, saying, “I’m Huh Kyung-young,” that goes against propriety. That’s what? Is it not the feeling of commiseration, the feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance? Then you haven’t observed propriety. The feeling of deference and compliance. the feeling of deference and compliance is this feeling of deference and compliance. What is this? The feeling of shame and dislike. You must uphold justice. It’s right and just, isn’t it? so this is the feeling of commiseration. You must feel pity for others. Isn’t that so? if your nephew is getting married and you don’t give even 10 won? If you have a lot of money, does that make sense? No, it doesn’t. Then you become a person without love. Is there such an ignorant uncle? It could be. if your nephew gets married, you should say, “Hey, I broke my savings for this. Use it for your wedding.” Observe propriety. this is commiseration. Your younger sibling feels commiseration because their nephew is getting married. “Hey, you have a rough journey ahead. You’re getting married. I’ll help you a little.” Your uncle broke his savings. You used this for your wedding. then that uncle will never be forgotten for life. This is the feeling of commiseration. it’s love. Is this filial piety without this useful? No, it’s not. this benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom, this feeling of shame and dislike, the feeling of deference and compliance, the feeling of right and wrong, without this, this is a virtue. This is also our virtue. What else is this virtue called? It’s the Four Virtues. What are the Four Virtues of nature? The Four Virtues of nature are “Won-Hyeong-I-Jeong” (origin, flourishing, harvest, storage). This “Won-Hyeong-I-Jeong” is the Four Virtues of nature, and it is also the Four Virtues of humanity. What did I say? “Won-Hyeong-I-Jeong” is spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In other words. spring, summer, autumn, and winter, if you look at them, they are warm, so it’s love. Isn’t that so? Spring, summer, autumn, and winter, this is benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom, which is “Won-Hyeong-I-Jeong,” and that is spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Right, this must be attached here, so there is spring, summer, autumn, and winter here too. There must be benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom here, and benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom here, and spring, summer, autumn, and winter here. It all goes in. You are all getting confused about this. Only by doing this can you thoroughly understand the way of humanity. isn’t that so? But young people these days are not educated in this. Isn’t it interesting? This gets complicated if you ask me about it for no reason. When a bow is shot, it goes far, doesn’t it? Benefit widely. Yes, when a bow is shot, you look at what’s in front of you and shoot the bow. It shoots far. it means “great.” Great. Hongik. this is Hongik.

The Essence of a Righteous Spirit and the Principle of Joy
The concept of a “righteous spirit” is paramount, reflecting a historical emphasis within the Korean people, evident in traditions such as the “scholar’s spirit” (선비 정신), the “independence spirit” (독립 정신), and the “patriotic and service spirit” (애국 정신과 봉사 정신) that propelled the “Miracle on the Han River” (한강의 기적). A righteous spirit is fundamentally rooted in the understanding of the natural order, leading to perpetual joy. This joy is not merely an emotion but a profound state of being derived from comprehending the universal principles of existence. Conversely, a spirit disconnected from this natural order inevitably experiences sorrow. The vast majority of humanity, approximately 99.9%, operates from a state of sorrow, while a mere 0.1% embodies this joyful, righteous spirit. It is this minute fraction that ultimately guides and shapes the world.

The Ari-rang Spirit and the Pursuit of the Impossible
Individuals possessing this righteous spirit are characterized by their willingness to challenge the seemingly impossible. For instance, while most perceive Mars as an uninhabitable planet with extreme temperatures, individuals like Elon Musk envision and pursue its colonization. This drive stems from an inherent joy in confronting challenges, contrasting sharply with the sorrow experienced by those who focus solely on obstacles. The “Ari-rang” (아리랑) spirit, deeply embedded in the Korean psyche, encapsulates this principle: living in harmony with the natural order brings constant joy. Deviating from this order, however, leads to sorrow. Thus, the Ari-rang spirit is intrinsically linked to a joyful disposition, reflecting a profound connection to the cosmos.

The Eight Cardinal Virtues of the Korean People
The Korean people’s inherent moral framework is encapsulated in eight cardinal virtues, which Huh Kyung young elaborates upon. These virtues form the bedrock of the national character:
Filial Piety (孝, Hyo): The utmost respect and care for one’s parents.
Fraternal Love (悌, Je): Harmony and affection among siblings.
Loyalty (忠, Chung): Devotion to one’s nation and principles.
Trustworthiness (信, Shin): Honesty and reliability in all dealings, encompassing religious faith.
Propriety (禮, Ye): Adherence to social norms, etiquette, and respectful conduct.
Righteousness (義, Ui): Upholding justice and moral principles.
Integrity (廉, Yeom): Maintaining a sense of honor and incorruptibility.
Shame (恥, Chi): The capacity for self-reflection and feeling remorse for wrongdoing, coupled with humility.

These eight virtues represent the traditional moral compass of the Korean people.

The Four Essential Qualities: The Foundation of Virtue
Beyond the eight cardinal virtues, there exist four fundamental qualities that serve as their indispensable foundation. These qualities are not merely supplementary but are integral, acting as the “seasoning” that imbues the virtues with true meaning and efficacy. Without these four, the eight virtues remain incomplete and ineffective. These qualities are:
Sincerity/Devotion (誠, Seong): The earnestness and genuine effort applied to any action.
Trust/Faith (信, Shin): Unwavering belief and confidence, both in others and in principles.
Love (愛, Ae): Compassion, benevolence, and affection towards all beings.
Prudence/Wisdom (制, Je): The ability to discern right from wrong and act judiciously.

These four qualities, collectively referred to as “Seong-Shin-Ae-Je” (성신애제), are crucial. For instance, filial piety without sincerity is not true filial piety. Loyalty without love is mere subservience. These four qualities determine “Hwa-Bok-Bo-Heung” (화복보응), which refers to the outcomes of fortune, disaster, and their corresponding retributions. They ensure that actions are not only outwardly correct but also inwardly pure and beneficial.

The Interconnectedness of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity (天地人, Cheon-Ji-In)
The concept of “Cheon-Ji-In” (천지인), or Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, is a fundamental principle that permeates all existence. Heaven (天, Cheon) represents space, the boundless void that allows for all things to exist. Earth (地, Ji) represents matter, the physical forms that occupy space. Humanity (人, In) represents consciousness and the living beings that interact within this framework. These three elements are not separate but are inextricably intertwined, existing within every single entity.
Heaven as Space: Heaven is not merely the sky above but encompasses all space, from the vast cosmos to the microscopic voids within cells. Every object, including the human body, contains this “heaven” as internal space.
Earth as Matter: Earth represents the physical substance, the tangible aspect of existence.
Humanity as Being: Humanity represents the conscious entity, the individual who interacts with and perceives Heaven and Earth.

This profound interconnectedness implies that no element can exist without the others. Just as a tree requires both the ground (Earth) and the open air (Heaven) to grow, so too does every object and being embody all three. The human body itself is a microcosm of Cheon-Ji-In: the feet connect to the Earth, the internal spaces within cells represent Heaven, and the body itself is Humanity. To separate these elements is to misunderstand the fundamental nature of reality. This understanding is crucial for comprehending the “Dao” (道), the ultimate principle of the universe.

Hongik Ideology: The Guiding Principle of the Korean People
The “Hongik Ideology” (홍익 이념), or “Hongik Sasang” (홍익 사상), is the foundational moral philosophy of the Korean people, originally presented by Dangun. It signifies “broadly benefiting humanity” or “greatly expanding welfare for all.” This ideology is not merely a concept but a practical directive to live in a way that extends benevolence and positive influence to others.
Broad Benevolence: Hongik emphasizes acting for the greater good, encompassing all people rather than focusing on individual or narrow interests. It is about “adding” to others’ well-being, not just one’s own.
Connection to Virtues: The Hongik Ideology is the overarching principle that unifies and elevates the eight cardinal virtues (Hyo, Je, Chung, Shin, Ye, Ui, Yeom, Chi) and the four essential qualities (Seong, Shin, Ae, Je). Each of these virtues and qualities must be imbued with the spirit of Hongik to be truly meaningful.
The Symbol of the Great Bow: The term “Hongik” itself is symbolically linked to the “great bow” (큰 활). The character for “Hong” (弘) contains the radical for “bow” (弓), implying a people who wield a powerful bow not for selfish gain or conquest, but to aim for the broad benefit of all humanity. This is why the Chinese historically referred to Koreans as the “Dongyi” (東夷) people, meaning “Eastern people who use great bows.” This signifies a nation that does not invade others but rather acts for universal welfare.

The Equation of Virtue: Interconnectedness and Application
Huh Kyung young describes the entire framework of virtues and ideologies as a complex “equation.” This implies that each element is not isolated but is multiplied and integrated with others to form a complete and functional system.
Multiplicative Relationship: The eight cardinal virtues (Hyo, Je, Chung, Shin, Ye, Ui, Yeom, Chi) are not standalone but must be multiplied by the four essential qualities (Seong, Shin, Ae, Je). For example, “Seong-Hyo” (誠孝) means sincere filial piety, “Seong-Chung” (誠忠) means sincere loyalty, and so forth. This integration ensures that actions are performed with genuine intent and love.
Hongik as the Ultimate Multiplier: The Hongik Ideology acts as the ultimate overarching principle that encompasses and completes all other virtues and qualities. It is the “great bow” that directs all actions towards the collective good. Without Hongik, even seemingly virtuous acts can become self-serving or narrow in scope.
Practical Application: This “equation” is not abstract but has practical implications for daily life. For instance, loyalty to a superior must be tempered by Hongik; if a superior acts against the nation’s welfare, true loyalty demands speaking out, not blind obedience.

The Four Beginnings (四端, Sa-dan) and the Four Virtues (四德, Sa-deok)
The Hongik spirit is intrinsically linked to the “Four Beginnings” (四端, Sa-dan) of Mencius, which represent the innate moral inclinations of humanity. These are:
Commiseration (惻隱之心, Cheok-eun Ji-sim): The feeling of pity and compassion for others. This corresponds to the virtue of Benevolence (仁, In).
Shame and Dislike (羞惡之心, Su-o Ji-sim): The feeling of shame for one’s own wrongdoing and dislike for evil in others. This corresponds to the virtue of Righteousness (義, Ui).
Deference and Compliance (辭讓之心, Sa-yang Ji-sim): The feeling of modesty and yielding to others. This corresponds to the virtue of Propriety (禮, Ye).
Right and Wrong (是非之心, Si-bi Ji-sim): The ability to distinguish between right and wrong. This corresponds to the virtue of Wisdom (智, Ji).

These Four Beginnings are the manifestations of a Hongik-driven spirit. Without Hongik, only the “Seven Emotions” (七情, Chil-jeong) remain, which can lead to problematic outcomes. The Four Beginnings are also equated with the “Four Virtues” (四德, Sa-deok) of Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, and Wisdom (仁義禮智, In-Ui-Ye-Ji). Furthermore, these human virtues parallel the “Four Virtues of Nature” (自然의 四德), which are “Originality, Flourishing, Harmony, and Rectitude” (元亨利貞, Won-Hyeong-I-Jeong), corresponding to the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. This intricate web of interconnected concepts forms a comprehensive philosophical system that guides human conduct and understanding of the universe.

Historical Examples of the Hongik Spirit
The profound impact of the Hongik spirit is evident in historical anecdotes, particularly concerning the exemplary conduct of Korean women during the Joseon Dynasty. Huh Kyung young recounts the story of a gisaeng (courtesan) who, despite her social standing, embodied the highest virtues.
The Virtuous Gisaeng: This gisaeng, who had a relationship with a nobleman, observed a three-year mourning period at his grave after his death, even though she was not obligated to do so. When confronted by men who sought to exploit her beauty in her isolated vigil, she disfigured her own face with a knife to deter them, prioritizing her loyalty and devotion over her physical appearance. This act of extreme self-sacrifice and unwavering commitment to her principles deeply moved those who witnessed it.
Contrast with Other Cultures: Huh Kyung young contrasts this with other cultures, particularly China, suggesting that such profound acts of virtue and self-sacrifice were uniquely characteristic of the Korean people, earning them respect and admiration.

This historical example underscores the depth of the Hongik spirit within the Korean people, demonstrating how the virtues of loyalty, propriety, and love, when guided by a broad sense of benevolence, can lead to extraordinary acts of moral fortitude. The entire system of virtues, from the eight cardinal virtues to the four essential qualities, the Four Beginnings, and the Four Virtues, is interconnected like a complex equation, where each element influences and completes the others, ultimately leading to the realization of the Hongik ideal.

The Essence of Righteous Mind: Joy in Universal Principles

The concept of a “righteous mind” is paramount, a tradition deeply rooted in our heritage, exemplified by the scholarly spirit of our ancestors and the patriotic and philanthropic endeavors that fueled our nation’s modernization and economic miracle. A truly righteous mind finds joy in understanding the universal principles of nature. When one comprehends these cosmic truths, happiness becomes an inherent state, transcending sorrow. Conversely, deviation from these principles leads to sadness. This profound understanding is embodied in the spirit of “Arirang,” which signifies a constant state of joy when living in harmony with nature’s laws.

This perspective is rare, embraced by only a minuscule fraction of the population—approximately 0.1%—yet it is this select group that leads the world. Consider the ambition to journey to Mars: while 99.9% of people focus on the planet’s scorching temperatures, those with a righteous mind, like Elon Musk, envision the possibility with joy, undeterred by perceived impossibilities. Their pursuit is driven by an inner delight, not by the sorrow of limitations.

  1. The Eight Virtues of the Korean People: Pillars of a Righteous Society
Our nation’s spirit is fundamentally guided by eight core virtues, which serve as the bedrock of our collective consciousness. These virtues are:

Filial Piety (孝): Reverence and care for one’s parents.
Fraternal Love (悌): Harmony and respect among siblings.
Loyalty (忠): Devotion to one’s nation and community.
Trustworthiness (信): Integrity and reliability in all dealings.
Propriety (禮): Adherence to appropriate conduct and etiquette.
Righteousness (義): Upholding justice and moral principles.
Integrity (廉): Honesty and incorruptibility.
Sense of Shame (恥): The capacity to feel remorse for wrongdoing, fostering humility.

These eight virtues, deeply ingrained in our cultural fabric, define the moral compass of our people.

  1. The Four Essential Qualities: Foundation for Virtuous Living
Beyond the eight virtues, four fundamental qualities—sincerity, trust, love, and respect—act as indispensable catalysts, transforming mere adherence to principles into a truly meaningful existence. These qualities are not separate but are interwoven with each of the eight virtues, elevating them from abstract concepts to living practices.

Sincerity (誠): Genuine devotion and earnestness.
Trust (信): Unwavering belief and confidence.
Love (愛): Compassion and benevolence.
Respect (悌): Esteem and consideration for others.

For instance, filial piety without sincerity is hollow; loyalty without trust is fragile; and propriety without love is merely a superficial gesture. These four qualities infuse the eight virtues with vitality, ensuring that actions are not just performed but are imbued with genuine intent and positive impact. They are the “seasoning” that makes the virtues palatable and effective, determining the outcomes of fortune, disaster, retribution, and reward in life.

  1. The Interconnectedness of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity: A Holistic Perspective
The universe operates on a principle of profound interconnectedness, where Heaven (天), Earth (地), and Humanity (人) are inseparable. Heaven represents space, the boundless expanse that allows all things to exist. Earth embodies matter, the tangible forms within that space. Humanity, in turn, is the conscious being that perceives and interacts with both.

This trinity is not merely an external concept but is intrinsically present within every entity, including the human body.

Heaven within: The spaces within our cells, organs (like the lungs filled with air), and even the empty space around objects, all represent “Heaven.”
Earth within: Our physical body, composed of matter, is “Earth.”
Humanity within: Our consciousness and spirit embody “Humanity.”

Just as a house requires space for people to enter, and a tree needs open air to grow, every material object and living being is a manifestation of this harmonious interplay. To separate Heaven, Earth, and Humanity is to misunderstand the fundamental nature of existence. This holistic understanding is crucial for comprehending the true essence of the universe and our place within it.

  1. Hongik: The Guiding Principle of the Korean People
The overarching philosophy that encapsulates all these virtues and principles is “Hongik” (弘益), meaning “to widely benefit humanity.” This concept, bestowed upon us by Dangun, our mythical founder, is the original moral code of our nation. It signifies a commitment to broad benevolence, to embracing and enriching all people, rather than focusing solely on individual gain.

The character “Hong” (弘) itself symbolizes a great bow, held by a person, aiming for a target. This imagery suggests that our people are “the people of the great bow,” known for their strength and expansive vision. The “Yi” (益) in Hongik represents “benefit” or “addition,” implying that our aim is to add value and well-being to all.

This “great bow” is not to be used for narrow, selfish purposes or territorial conquest, but rather to shoot for the “great benefit” of all humankind. This is why our nation has historically refrained from invading other lands, prioritizing universal welfare over individual or nationalistic ambition. Hongik is the ultimate expression of our national identity, encompassing the eight virtues and the four essential qualities, all harmonized to serve the greater good.

  1. The Four Beginnings and Four Virtues: The Rational Foundation of Hongik
The spirit of Hongik naturally gives rise to the “Four Beginnings” (四端) and the “Four Virtues” (四德), which are the rational and ethical underpinnings of human conduct.

The Four Beginnings are:

Compassion (惻隱之心): The feeling of pity and sympathy for others’ suffering, leading to benevolence (仁).
Shame (羞惡之心): The feeling of shame for one’s own wrongdoing and hatred for evil, leading to righteousness (義).
Deference (辭讓之心): The feeling of modesty and yielding to others, leading to propriety (禮).
Right and Wrong (是非之心): The ability to discern truth from falsehood and right from wrong, leading to wisdom (智).

These Four Beginnings are the innate moral inclinations that, when cultivated, manifest as the Four Virtues: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom. These virtues are not merely human constructs but mirror the natural order of the universe, akin to the “Four Origins” (元亨利貞) of nature—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—each embodying love, growth, harvest, and storage.

Just as the seasons flow in harmony, so too should human actions be guided by these virtues. A person who embodies these principles acts with love, upholds justice, practices humility, and exercises sound judgment. This comprehensive framework, from the universal principles of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity to the specific virtues and their underlying qualities, forms a complete “equation” for a righteous and fulfilling life, a profound wisdom that our ancestors understood and lived by.

The Right Mindset: Leading the World with Clarity

  1. The Essence of a Righteous Mind: Joy in Universal Principles
Huh Kyung-young begins by addressing the concept of a “righteous mind,” a notion deeply ingrained in Korean heritage, exemplified by the “scholar spirit” (선비 정신). He notes that throughout history, from the era of independence to the “Miracle on the Han River,” individuals guided by patriotism and service have led the nation. The core of a righteous mind, he explains, lies in understanding the universe’s principles, which naturally lead to joy. He contrasts this with a mindset rooted in sorrow, which he asserts is prevalent in 99.9% of people. The remaining 0.1%, those who embrace joy and challenge the impossible, are the ones who lead the world.

  2. Arirang: The Spirit of the Korean People
Huh Kyung-young identifies “Arirang” as the quintessential spirit of the Korean people. He explains that living in harmony with the natural order brings perpetual joy, while deviating from it leads to sorrow. This “Arirang spirit” embodies the inherent joy derived from aligning with universal principles.

  3. The Eight Virtues (八德) of the Korean People
He then elaborates on the “Eight Virtues” (八德) that form the bedrock of the Korean ethos:
Filial Piety (孝): Reverence and care for parents.
Fraternal Love (悌): Harmony and respect among siblings.
Loyalty (忠): Devotion to one’s nation.
Trustworthiness (信): Faith and reliability in relationships, encompassing religious belief.
Propriety (禮): Adherence to social norms and etiquette.
Righteousness (義): Moral uprightness and justice.
    Integrity (廉): Honesty and incorruptibility.
Shame (恥): A sense of humility and self-reflection.

These eight virtues, he states, are the traditional moral compass of the Korean people.

  1. The Four Cardinal Virtues (四德) and Their Interplay
Beyond the Eight Virtues, Huh Kyung-young introduces the “Four Cardinal Virtues” (四德) as foundational elements that permeate and complete the Eight Virtues:
Sincerity (誠): Genuine and earnest effort.
    Trust (信): Faith and reliability.
    Love (愛): Compassion and affection.
    Prudence (制): Discretion and moderation.

these four virtues act as “seasonings” that enhance and validate the Eight Virtues. For instance, filial piety without sincerity is incomplete, and loyalty without love is hollow. These four virtues determine “fortune and misfortune, retribution and reward” (禍福報應).

  1. The Principle of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity (天地人)
Huh Kyung-young expands on the concept of “Heaven, Earth, and Humanity” (天地人), explaining that “Heaven” (天) represents space, “Earth” (地) represents matter, and “Humanity” (人) represents beings. He illustrates that space is not merely external but exists within all things, from a football to a camera, and even within human cells. This interconnectedness means that Heaven, Earth, and Humanity are inseparable and coexist within every entity. Understanding this principle is crucial for comprehending the essence of the “Dao” (道).

  2. Hongik (弘益): The Guiding Philosophy of the Korean People
The overarching philosophy that encompasses all these virtues and principles is “Hongik” (弘益), meaning “to widely benefit humanity.” This concept, presented by Dangun, signifies a broad and inclusive spirit of contributing to the welfare of all. Huh Kyung-young connects “Hongik” to the historical term “Dongyi” (東夷), meaning “Eastern People of the Great Bow,” suggesting that the Korean people are those who wield a “great bow” (大弓) not for selfish gain, but for the collective good of humanity. This “great bow” symbolizes a commitment to universal benefit rather than narrow self-interest or aggression.

  3. The Four Beginnings (四端) and Four Virtues (四德)
Huh Kyung-young further links “Hongik” to the “Four Beginnings” (四端) of Mencius:
Commiseration (惻隱之心): The feeling of compassion.
Shame and Dislike (羞惡之心): The feeling of shame for wrongdoing and dislike for evil.
Deference and Compliance (辭讓之心): The feeling of modesty and yielding.
Right and Wrong (是非之心): The ability to discern right from wrong.

These Four Beginnings, he explains, are equivalent to the “Four Virtues” (四德) of benevolence (仁), righteousness (義), propriety (禮), and wisdom (智). He also connects these to the “Four Seasons” (四時) of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and the “Four Natural Virtues” (四德) of origin (元), flourishing (亨), advantage (利), and firmness (貞). This intricate web of concepts demonstrates how all these elements are interconnected and essential for a complete understanding of the human and natural order.

  1. The Equation of the Korean Spirit
Huh Kyung-young concludes by describing these interconnected principles as an “equation.” When one element, such as filial piety, is understood, it naturally leads to the understanding of others, like the Four Cardinal Virtues, Hongik, the Four Beginnings, and the Four Seasons. This comprehensive framework, he asserts, is the true essence of the Korean spirit, a profound and interconnected system of values that guides individuals toward a life of purpose and universal benefit.

The Korean spirit, “Hongik,” means broadly benefiting others, not just oneself.
This spirit is embodied in the “great bow” of the Dongyi people, aiming for universal good.
Traditional virtues like filial piety and loyalty must be rooted in the Hongik spirit.
Fundamental principles (sincerity, trust, love, wisdom) are essential “sauces” for these virtues.
The concept of “Cheonjiin” (heaven, earth, human) signifies that space (heaven) is inherent in all matter and beings.

  2. Historical & Epochal Context
The lecture situates its topic within the historical context of the Korean people, referencing the “Seonbi spirit” (선비 정신) from the past, the “spirit of independence” (독립 정신) during modernization, and the “patriotic and service spirit” (애국 정신과 봉사 정신) during the “Miracle on the Han River” (한강의 기적). It also mentions the traditional “Eight Virtues” (팔대 등록) and the historical relationship with China, noting that China could not conquer Korea for 5,000 years due to the Korean people’s strong moral character. The story of a gisaeng (기생) observing a three-year mourning period further illustrates historical Korean values.

Four Virtues of Nature (자연의 사덕): The natural principles of creation, growth, harvest, and storage (원형이정), which correspond to spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and are also linked to benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom.

  5. Central Questions & Answers
Central Question: What constitutes a righteous spirit, how can one cultivate it, and what were the spiritual states of religious figures and entrepreneurs Huh Kyung-young associated with in his youth?

Speaker’s Main Answer:
A righteous spirit is one that understands the principles of the universe and finds joy in living according to nature’s laws, rather than being consumed by sadness. The core of this spirit for the Korean people is “Hongik” (홍익), which means broadly benefiting others. This Hongik spirit encompasses traditional virtues like filial piety, loyalty, and courtesy, and is further supported by fundamental principles such as sincerity, trust, love, and wisdom.

  1. Conclusion & Strategic / Philosophical Implications
The lecture concludes by reiterating that the Hongik (홍익) ideology is the primary spiritual culture of the Korean people, from which the “Four Beginnings” (사단) emerge. It implies that a spirit lacking Hongik will only possess the “Seven Emotions” (칠정), leading to problems. He laments that modern youth are not educated in these traditional values. The philosophical implication is that true human conduct and societal harmony are achieved when all virtues and principles are integrated under the overarching Hongik spirit, which aims for the broad, collective good, symbolized by the “great bow” shooting far for the benefit of all humanity.

  2. Cross-Referencing

  3. Multilingual Translation Strategy
To produce reliable translations, a multi-stage workflow is recommended:

Initial Machine Translation (MT) Pass: Use a robust MT engine (e.g., DeepL, Google Translate) to generate a raw English transcript. This provides a baseline.
Human Post-Editing (HPE) by Bilingual Expert: A native English speaker fluent in Korean, with expertise in philosophical or spiritual discourse, should review and correct the MT output. This step is crucial for:
Accuracy of Proper Nouns: Ensuring correct spelling of names like “Huh Kyung-young” and specific Korean terms (e.g., Hongik, Cheonjiin, Seonbi).
Contextual Nuance: Capturing the subtle meanings of philosophical concepts (e.g., “righteous spirit,” “Four Beginnings,” “Eight Virtues”) which MT often misinterprets.
Idiomatic Expressions: Translating Korean idioms and cultural references appropriately.
Speaker’s Tone and Style: Adjusting the translation to reflect His informal yet profound lecturing style.
Terminology Glossary Development: Create a glossary of key terms (e.g., Hongik, Cheonjiin, 사단, 칠정, 팔대 등록) with their preferred English translations and brief explanations. This ensures consistency across all translations.
Back-Translation (Optional but Recommended): For critical passages, a separate Korean speaker could back-translate the English version into Korean. Comparing this back-translation with the original Korean helps identify any loss of meaning or misinterpretations.
Review by Subject Matter Expert: A final review by someone familiar with Huh Kyung-young’s teachings or Korean philosophy can ensure the translated content accurately reflects His intended message.
Localization for Other Languages: Once a high-quality English version is established, it can serve as a source text for translation into other major languages, following a similar HPE process with native speakers of those languages.

This layered approach combines the efficiency of MT with the precision and cultural understanding of human experts, mitigating the inaccuracies common in automatic captions for complex, culturally specific content.

  1. Content Gaps & Unaddressed Areas
Specifics of Huh Kyung-young’s Youthful Associations: The question explicitly asks about the spiritual states of religious figures and entrepreneurs Huh Kyung-young associated with in his youth. While the lecture discusses general principles of a righteous spirit, it does not provide specific details or examples from his personal experiences with these individuals.
Practical Application for Modern Youth: The lecture notes that modern youth are not educated in these traditional values. While it defines the values, it does not offer concrete, actionable strategies or educational frameworks for how young people today can learn and integrate the Hongik spirit and associated virtues into their lives.
Distinction between “Four Beginnings” and “Seven Emotions”: The lecture briefly mentions that the Hongik spirit leads to the “Four Beginnings” while its absence leads to the “Seven Emotions.” However, it does not elaborate on what the “Seven Emotions” are or why they are problematic in the absence of Hongik.

  2. Future Predictions & Prophetic Statements

Executive Insight
This lecture by Huh Kyung-young offers a profound insight into the Korean national spirit, identifying “Hongik” (broad benefit to humanity) as its foundational principle. It argues that traditional virtues like filial piety and loyalty, along with fundamental principles such as sincerity and love, must be integrated under this overarching Hongik ideology to achieve true human conduct and societal harmony. He metaphorically describes this as the “great bow” of the Dongyi people, aimed at universal good rather than narrow self-interest. The lecture implies that a society lacking this comprehensive, interconnected understanding of virtues and principles, particularly among its youth, risks moral decay. For a thoughtful professional, this analysis underscores the importance of a holistic ethical framework that transcends individual gain, advocating for a leadership and societal structure rooted in collective well-being and universal benevolence.
