육의 양식과 영의 양식: 삶의 진정한 목적

오늘은 근로자의 날입니다. 근로자들을 위해 한마디 하자면, 육의 양식을 위해 수고하는 것은 헛된 일입니다. 영적인 양식을 먹어야 합니다. 육의 양식을 먹는 자는 세상에서 끝나지만, 영의 양식을 먹는 자는 영원합니다. 그러니 내 말에 귀를 기울여야 합니다.

예수님 시대에 제가 영의 양식을 준 적이 있습니다. 그때 5천 명이 육의 양식이 없어 밥도 못 먹고 앉아 있었는데, 제가 물고기 두 마리와 떡 다섯 개를 나눠주었습니다. 산처럼 도시락을 싸 놓은 것이 아니라, 맨손으로 계속 떠주니 도시락이 계속 나왔습니다. 그것이 바로 영의 양식입니다. 사람들은 그것을 먹고 배가 불렀다고 하지만, 사실 그것은 밥이 아니었습니다. 사람들은 그것이 밥인 줄 알았지만, 실제로는 영의 양식이었던 것입니다. 이스라엘 사람들이 처음으로 영의 양식을 먹어본 경험이었습니다.

오병이어의 참된 의미와 기독교의 상징
오병이어의 ‘이어’는 물고기 두 마리를 의미하며, 이는 예수를 상징합니다. 교회에 가면 물고기 두 마리가 서로 마주 보고 있는 문양을 볼 수 있는데, 이것이 바로 쌍어 문양입니다. 로마 시대에는 기독교인임을 드러내면 죽임을 당했기 때문에, 기독교인들은 이 쌍어 문양을 암호처럼 사용하여 서로를 알아보았습니다. 편지에 이 그림을 그려 놓으면 같은 기독교인임을 알 수 있었던 것입니다.

떡 다섯 개는 무엇을 의미할까요? ‘이어’가 예수를 말하듯이, 떡 다섯 개는 예수가 주변 다섯 개 나라에 둘러싸여 있음을 의미합니다. 요르단, 아수라지 등 이스라엘 주변의 다섯 개 나라에 예수가 찡겨 있는 형국을 나타냅니다. 오병이어는 5천 명에게 도시락을 준 것이 아니라, 영의 양식을 준 것입니다. 성경에서는 목사들이 이것을 육의 양식을 준 것으로 해석하고 있지만, 이는 잘못된 해석입니다.

육의 양식과 영의 양식의 관계
우리가 이 세상에서 100년간 먹는 육의 양식은 공부하라고 주는 것입니다. 실제 양식은 영의 양식입니다. 육의 양식을 먹고 살아 있어야 영의 양식이 들어갈 수 있으니, 육의 양식도 필요합니다. 그러나 육의 양식은 영의 양식을 기르기 위한 수단일 뿐입니다. 양식의 궁극적인 목적은 영에 있습니다.

사람들은 영적인 것이 육의 양식을 위해 있다고 착각합니다. 열심히 교회에 가서 로또 복권 당첨을 기도하는 사람이 있습니다. 로또 복권이 당첨되어 육의 양식이 생기면, 그것을 교회에 헌금하여 영의 양식으로 바꾸면 됩니다. 기도한 것이 헛된 것은 아니지만, 그 돈을 술 마시고 담배 피우는 데 쓰면 육의 양식으로 끝나버립니다. 육의 양식을 하늘에 바쳐 영의 양식으로 바꿔야 합니다.

교회에서는 십일조를 통해 아홉 개는 육의 양식으로 쓰고, 한 개는 영의 양식으로 쓰면 된다고 하지만, 실제로는 잘못된 것입니다. 원래 육의 양식은 적어야 하고, 영의 양식에 투자를 많이 해야 합니다. 평생 밥 먹는 데 1억도 안 썼지만, 절에 100억을 보시한 사람도 있습니다. 이처럼 큰 복을 가진 사람들은 절에 불사가 있으면 왕창 내놓습니다. 우리는 영의 양식에 투자를 많이 해야 합니다.

의지의 중요성: 안중근 의사와 농개
우리는 거짓말하지 말아야 합니다. 어린아이가 엄마와 거짓말하지 않기로 약속하는 것은 영적으로 약속한 것입니다. 안중근 의사가 사형을 선고받고 항소를 하려 했을 때, 어머니에게서 편지가 왔습니다. “절대 항소하지 마라. 일본 사람들에게 살려달라고 할 필요 없다. 너는 대한민국을 위해 사형을 받도록 해라.” 어머니의 편지를 받은 안중근 의사는 항소를 포기하고 사형을 받았습니다. 어머니는 아들에게 거짓말하지 말라고 가르친 것입니다. 이토를 죽여 놓고 일본에게 살려달라고 하는 것은 거짓말이라는 뜻입니다. 어머니는 아들의 수의를 만들어 보내며, 거짓말하지 말고 남자답게 죽으라고 했습니다.

신앙의 본질은 마음에 있는 것이 아니라 의지에 있습니다. 의지를 굳게 가져야 합니다. 안중근 의사가 이토를 쏠 때는 의지가 굳었지만, 나중에 마음이 약해져 살려달라고 하면 남자가 허약한 것입니다. 우리의 믿음은 의지로 증명됩니다. 신인을 따라가는 의지를 보는 것입니다. 감정이 아닙니다. 의지가 굳어야 안중근 의사처럼 위대한 인물이 될 수 있습니다.

여성도 마찬가지입니다. 유관순 열사도 의지가 굳건했습니다. 그러나 여성이 의지가 너무 굳으면 팔자가 사나워진다고 합니다. 농개라는 기생은 의지가 굳어 죽음을 택했지만, 다른 기생들은 살았습니다. 농개는 일본 장수를 끌어안고 물속에 뛰어들었는데, 이는 의지가 굳은 여자였습니다. 아침에 죽여야겠다고 생각했다가 점심, 저녁에 바뀌는 것은 의지가 약한 것입니다. 감정은 의지보다 약합니다. 농개는 자신의 의지가 풀릴까 봐 열 개의 반지를 끼고 장수와 함께 물에 뛰어들어 죽었습니다. 의지가 강해야 합니다. 의지가 왔다 갔다 하면 병도 고치지 못합니다.

부모님의 희생과 우리의 도리
우리는 부모님의 뼈 속에 있는 영양분을 싹싹 긁어먹고 자랐습니다. 부모님들은 많은 자녀를 낳아 국가에서 10원도 받지 못하고, 학비를 마련하기 위해 맨땅에 헤딩하며 고생하셨습니다. 시골에서 돈 나올 곳이 없는데도 학비를 만들어 자녀들을 공부시켰습니다. 자녀들을 장가보내고 시집보내면 논밭이 있어도 거지가 되었습니다. 부모님들은 자녀들의 혼사를 치르고 빚쟁이가 되어도 웃고 있었습니다.

우리는 부모님께 진 빚을 갚을 수 없습니다. 그러니 모르는 사람들에게 부모님께 못 해드린 것을 해드려야 합니다. 길 가다가 어려운 사람이 있으면 자신의 형편대로 조금씩 도와주는 것이 부모님께 못한 것을 해드리는 것입니다.

진리와 정의, 그리고 단결의 중요성
오늘 이야기는 거짓말하지 말자는 것입니다. 농개 같은 여자, 안중근 의사 같은 사람들, 그리고 그들을 길러낸 훌륭한 어머니들이 있었습니다. 안중근 의사의 어머니는 아들이 죽을 것을 각오하고 수의를 만들어 보내며, 일본 사람들에게 살려달라고 구걸하지 말라고 부탁했습니다.

진리는 사람의 눈에 보이지 않아도 없어지지 않으며, 정의는 따르는 자가 없어도 항상 이깁니다. 죽더라도 거짓말하지 말라는 도산 안창호 선생의 말씀처럼, 우리는 진실을 지켜야 합니다.

이승만 대통령은 “united we stand, divided we fall”이라는 말을 남겼습니다. 뭉치면 살고, 흩어지면 죽는다는 뜻입니다. 우리는 뭉쳐야 합니다. 안티들이 신인을 괴롭히고 뭐라 해도, 우리는 하늘을 완성하고 새 예루살렘 성을 만들 때까지 뭉쳐야 합니다.
