The eye that focuses on weaknesses is negative, while the eye that sees strengths is positive. This positive perspective brings blessings.
The eye that leads to unhappiness is the one that fixates on others’ shortcomings. In any company, those who only criticize and find fault never succeed. Instead, those who seek out the company’s strengths, promote them, and work to enhance them are the ones who achieve success. Therefore, we must eliminate the tendency to see others’ weaknesses.
Buddhism, for example, has a problematic aspect when it suggests that someone with a disability, such as missing limbs, is suffering due to past sins. While there might be a karmic aspect, it is not appropriate to view it this way. Instead, when we see someone with disabilities, we should reflect on our own lives and be more careful. We should see them as individuals who, through their condition, are teaching others. We should focus on their strengths. When I was Jesus, people often asked me, “Why are some people disabled?” I would reply, “To show the glory of Heaven.” While ancestral karma might play a role, we should not interpret it in a purely Buddhist sense. These individuals exist for us to observe, learn from, and receive glory.
When we encounter a person with a disability, we should not think they are being punished for their sins. Instead, we should learn to take care of our own bodies. Through them, others receive glory, preventing negative outcomes. We learn to avoid actions that would bring divine retribution. By observing such individuals, we receive blessings. Unfortunately, many people in our society tend to avoid looking at those with disabilities.
- Transforming Adversity into Inspiration
If we adopt a positive perspective, even when we see someone with a disability, we can find inspiration. Imagine someone contemplating suicide who then encounters a person with missing limbs who is working or simply going about their day. This encounter could make them reconsider, thinking, “I have all my limbs, why should I end my life?” Or, seeing someone with a severe facial disfigurement who is still living, they might stop themselves from jumping off a building. Such encounters can save lives. A person’s disability does not harm others; instead, it helps many people achieve enlightenment and understanding. They inspire others. This is the correct perspective. We must not view it negatively or focus on their weaknesses. It is better to see their strengths.
For instance, someone contemplating suicide due to financial fraud might see a disabled person working a part-time job. They might then realize, “I have all my limbs; I can start over, even if I’ve lost everything else.” This perspective gives courage and glory to others, but only to those who choose to see strengths. If one focuses on weaknesses, thinking, “That person is disabled because of their sins,” there will be no personal growth. One might think, “I have all my limbs, why can’t I earn money when even they can?” This can motivate them to work harder.
Focusing on weaknesses leads to the downfall of a household, while focusing on strengths leads to prosperity. Observe wealthy families; they are often modest and humble. We can learn from their strengths, not their perceived arrogance or tax burdens. Instead of judging, we should recognize their positive qualities, such as humility, and emulate them to achieve success.
