2024.09.02.x120 Huh Kyung-young’s Unveiling of Providence. Beyond Truth, Ethics, and Law, Embracing the Eternal Principle of Love

This excerpt from an interview with Heo Kyung-young on “Heo Kyung-young TV” delves into his unique philosophical framework, distinguishing between “섭리 (Providence)” and other concepts like “진리 (Truth),” “윤리 (Ethics),” and “법리 (Legal Principles).” Heo Kyung-young argues that Providence transcends time and space, serving as the ultimate guiding principle, while other human-made systems are limited and often lead to societal problems. He emphasizes love and personal responsibility as core tenets of Providence.

Understanding Heo Kyung-young’s Philosophical Hierarchy

The Hierarchy of Principles: Providence at the Apex
Heo Kyung-young introduces a fascinating hierarchy of principles, placing Providence (섭리) at the very top. This is impressive because it challenges conventional thinking by positioning something beyond human-made laws and truths as the ultimate guide. He argues that understanding this hierarchy is crucial for a truly harmonious society.

So, there’s Providence here. Yes, if there’s Providence, then there’s Dori (道理 – proper conduct/reason) beneath it. Yes, understood? Yes, Dori. Then there’s Jinri (진리 – truth). Yes, right? Yes, there’s Yunri (윤리 – ethics). Yes, ethics, Hamri (합리 – rationality), right? Yes, Beopri (법리 – legal principles). Yes, legal principles are the lowest. Oh, right? Then, if there’s one more, after Providence, there’s Cheonri (천리 – heavenly principles). Oh, heavenly principles. Yes, the principles of heaven. Providence is replacing heavenly principles. So, there are seven stages in this world: Providence, Dori, Jinri, Yunri, Hamri, and Beopri.

Among them, the position of truth isn’t very high, is it? It’s in the middle. And this truth isn’t everything; truth is constrained by time and space. Yes, it’s constrained. Yes, ethics, rationality, and legal principles are constrained. Yes, but Dori and Providence are not related (to these constraints).

The Limitations of Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principles
Heo Kyung-young makes a powerful point about how “진리 (Truth),” “윤리 (Ethics),” and “법리 (Legal Principles)” are all constrained by time and space. This is a critical insight because it highlights the inherent flaws and limitations of human-made systems. He argues that these systems, while necessary, can become rigid and even harmful if not guided by the higher principle of Providence.

So, truth is attached to time and space. Providence doesn’t have that. Yes, it’s boundless. Oh, so if there’s time and space, it’s truth.

Truth is always accompanied by time and space.

So, truth is constrained by time and space. Then Providence is not constrained by time and space, right? Yes, that’s correct.

So, truth, ethics, and legal principles all change according to the flow of history and era. Ah, um, Providence doesn’t need historical eras.

Providence as Unconditional Love and Responsibility
Heo Kyung-young defines Providence as unconditional love and taking full responsibility. This is a deeply impactful message, especially in a society often quick to blame others. His example of the student who assaulted a teacher, and the teacher’s compassionate response, beautifully illustrates how acting from Providence can lead to healing and positive outcomes, rather than just punishment. This perspective encourages empathy and a broader understanding of human behavior.

So, when a mother gives birth to a child, her devotion to the child is Providence given by heaven. Ah, is that right or wrong? It’s right.

But you understand what I’m saying, right? Uh-huh. So, those who integrate victory, truth, ethics, and legal principles. Yes, it’s all heaven and earth. Right. So, if you’re always arguing about ethics, “Why are you doing that?” “Why did you break the law?” “Why are you going against the truth?” Would that work? No, it wouldn’t. So, you shouldn’t blame others.

We need to input this well, right? Should we put people in AI prison? You understand, right? A defective product came out. Whose responsibility is the defect? The person who was hit.

So, the path to Providence is love. Yes, love. Yes, the will of heaven is unconditionally love, self-love.

Attribute all responsibility to yourself; think that there is no one else. Understood? Think that you are the culprit for all causes. Right? That’s Providence.

The Danger of Legalism and the Importance of Compassion
Heo Kyung-young uses the example of Jewish law (율법) and Jesus’s actions to illustrate how rigid adherence to rules, even those seemingly divine, can become detrimental to humanity. This is a powerful critique of legalism and a strong argument for prioritizing compassion and human well-being over strict interpretations of law. It highlights the idea that laws should serve people, not the other way around.

Sir, then, in the past, when you were Jesus, you didn’t keep the law, but went with love, and the law… the law is like legal principles, right? You think the law is Providence because God made it, right? Yes, it’s not Providence. Yes, it’s religious doctrine, legal advice. It’s a law above law, legal advice. So, this is not right. It’s suffocating.

According to the law, even if there’s an emergency patient on Sunday, you shouldn’t touch them. Yes, that’s Judaism. Right, right? Oh, but what did Jesus say? “Is man for the law? Or is the law for man?” Yes, he said that.

So, the law becomes something that traps people. That’s why Jesus died confronting that law head-on. Yes, that’s right. It means Providence is not melted into the law. Yes, that’s right.

The Wisdom of “Dori” and Ancient Teachings
Heo Kyung-young connects his concept of “Dori (道理 – proper conduct/reason)” to ancient Korean wisdom, specifically citing Jeong Yak-yong’s “Mokmin Simseo” and the “Eight Articles” (팔조목). This is compelling because it shows how his philosophy resonates with timeless principles of human conduct, emphasizing self-cultivation, family harmony, and ethical interactions. He argues that these teachings are closer to Providence than to mere truth or ethics.

So, Dori is closer to Providence than to truth; this is all Providence. Yes, but people shouldn’t call all of this truth or ethics. This isn’t ethics. This is Dori.

Dori is the proper way for humans to live, isn’t it? Yes, Dori is higher than ethics, higher. The character ‘Do’ (道) is attached. Yes, it’s the principle that masters (道士) follow. It’s the Dori of people; the Dori of people is higher than ethics. That’s why it’s called Dori.

Is Dori some kind of truth? Dori is closer to Providence than rationality or anything like that, right? Yes, that’s right.

The Nature of Providence and its Distinction from Truth
The concept of Providence is essential for the comprehensive governance of the universe, extending its application to humanity as cosmic Providence. However, humans often find it challenging to access or comprehend Providence directly. Providence is not bound by time and space, unlike what is commonly understood as “truth.” Truth, in its conventional sense, is inherently tied to specific temporal and spatial contexts. For instance, the social norms of wearing a topknot in ancient times differ significantly from contemporary standards; adhering to such a practice today would be considered abnormal. This illustrates that truth is relative to its time and space. The religious truths of Judaism in Israel, for example, do not universally apply as truth elsewhere. Truth is always accompanied by the constraints of time and space.

Consider the actions of a child: behaviors acceptable in infancy are forgiven, but the same actions performed by an adult are not. This demonstrates that truth is conditional; there is a truth for infancy and a different truth for adulthood. Thus, truth is subject to the limitations of time and space. In contrast, Providence is entirely free from such constraints. Human destiny is bound by time and space, but human fate, or “sukmyeong,” is not. For example, parents remain one’s parents eternally, regardless of the passage of time or geographical separation. This immutable relationship exemplifies a principle beyond temporal and spatial limitations. The fundamental difference between truth and Providence is often misunderstood by humanity, a distinction that Huh Kyung young elucidates. Truth is that which changes with time and space, unable to transcend these dimensions. For instance, laws in North Korea differ from those in South Korea, and customs regulations in China vary from those elsewhere; these are all forms of truth.

The Subordinate Relationship of Ethics and Law to Truth
Beneath truth lies ethics, and further below that, law. These concepts are also subject to the constraints of time and space. Ethical principles and legal interpretations can vary significantly. For example, a case might be deemed innocent in a district court but guilty in a high court, or vice versa, due to differing legal interpretations. Ethics and law do not merely follow truth; they exist independently and are also bound by time and space. Laws and ethical standards evolve with historical and societal changes. For instance, anti-communist laws from the past are not applicable in the same way today. Thus, truth, ethics, and law are all subject to historical and temporal shifts.

The Supremacy of Providence and its Eternal Nature
Providence, however, is not subject to historical or temporal changes. God is eternal, and humanity is eternally subservient. Jesus, for example, remains Jesus across billions of years. Providence does not change. Therefore, Providence is the truth that is not constrained by time and space. The unconditional devotion of a mother to her child, for instance, is a manifestation of heavenly Providence. To disregard Providence is to misunderstand truth, and to misunderstand truth leads to a failure to grasp ethics, which in turn results in conflicts with the law.

The Concept of “Tongseop” (Integration) and its Significance
The comprehensive understanding of these interconnected concepts—Providence, truth, ethics, and law—is termed “Tongseop,” or integration. This integration is often deemed impossible for ordinary individuals. Huh Kyung young asserts that he is uniquely capable of lecturing on the unified field theory, which encompasses this integration, as others lack such a conceptual framework. Most discussions of truth remain superficial, failing to adequately define truth, ethics, law, or Providence. The entities that change with history and time—ethics, truth, and law—cannot overcome Providence.

Providence as the Foundation of Love and Responsibility
The command to “love humanity” is not a truth or a law, but an act of Providence, a divine decree. This highlights the formidable nature of Providence. Consider a scenario where a high school student assaults a teacher, breaking their teeth. Under the strict application of ethics and law, the student would face imprisonment. Even under the framework of truth, society would generally agree that the student should be punished. However, a spiritual leader, such as a priest or a figure like Huh Kyung young, would approach the situation from the perspective of Providence. They would inquire into the student’s upbringing, asking about their mother and their developmental environment.

The Societal Impact of Neglecting Providence: The Case of Anger Control Disorder
Many children grow up without adequate parental presence, even if their parents are technically alive and well-off. They are often shuttled between academies, returning home to an empty house, treated more like objects to be stored than individuals to be nurtured. This environment can lead to anger control disorders. Huh Kyung young notes that a significant portion of the population, possibly 50%, suffers from anger control issues, a phenomenon he attributes to rapid economic development. The pressure to succeed quickly, prevalent since the era of President Park Chung-hee, has eroded human character. Children, unable to tolerate frustration, resort to aggression.

From the perspective of Providence, the fault lies not with the student, but with the parents and teachers who failed to provide proper guidance. Just as a robot’s malfunction is the owner’s responsibility, a child’s misbehavior reflects a failure in their upbringing. If the teacher, instead of demanding compensation, were to express remorse for failing to understand the student’s lack of parental love and for reprimanding them harshly, the need for legal or ethical judgment would diminish. Such an act of forgiveness, rooted in Providence, could transform the student’s life. A student who was forgiven by a teacher might, years later, express profound gratitude for being spared imprisonment, recognizing that it allowed them to succeed in life.

The Hierarchy of Principles: Providence, Doctrine, Truth, Ethics, Rationality, and Law
This illustrates that ethics and law cannot supersede truth, and truth cannot supersede Providence. Providence dictates that the faults of the youth often stem from the shortcomings of adults. Excessive adherence to ethics and law can stifle children. Instead, an approach rooted in love, which is the essence of Providence, is necessary. The divine will is unequivocally love and freedom. This means transcending the rigid application of ethics, law, and truth. All responsibility should be attributed to oneself, viewing oneself as the primary cause of any issue. This is the essence of Providence, a principle often neglected in contemporary education, leading to societal failures.

The Interconnectedness of Principles and the Importance of “Tongseop”
Those who integrate Providence, truth, ethics, and law are truly enlightened. Constantly faulting others based on ethics, law, or truth is counterproductive. Avoiding blame and taking personal responsibility, regardless of national context, leads to success. This wisdom, rooted in Providence, transcends the limitations of truth, ethics, and law. Adhering strictly to truth, ethics, and law alone will not improve society; rather, a holistic understanding, or “Tongseop,” is required. While a judge must adhere to legal principles to maintain their position, even legal judgments should ideally be influenced by Providence. A judge should consider the circumstances and remorse of an offender, allowing Providence to intervene, rather than strictly applying punitive measures that could ruin a life. Society is complex, and Providence must not be disregarded.

The Limitations of Religious Law and the Example of Jesus
Even religious laws, such as the Mosaic Law, which might appear to be Providence because they were divinely ordained, are not. They are religious doctrines, legal frameworks that can become oppressive. The Law, for instance, prohibited treating emergency patients on the Sabbath. Jesus challenged this, asserting that humanity was not made for the Law, but the Law for humanity. He prioritized saving lives over strict adherence to Sabbath laws, ultimately leading to his crucifixion. The Law, in this sense, lacked the essence of Providence, becoming a form of enslavement. Just as a person should not become a slave to their car, humanity should not become enslaved by rigid laws.

Jeong Yak-yong’s “Mongmin Simseo” and the Six Principles of Governance
Jeong Yak-yong’s “Mongmin Simseo” (Admonitions on Governing the People) outlines six principles for officials:
Chigung (치궁): Proper bodily conduct.
Cheongsim (청심): Pure-heartedness.
Jega (제가): Proper family management.
Byeonggaek (병객): Proper guest reception.
Jeonyong (전용): Proper use of material resources.
Nakshi (낙시): Proper giving and generosity.

These principles, though rooted in Confucianism, align closely with Providence rather than mere law or ethics. They emphasize the highest and most righteous conduct, not merely intermediate standards. For example, proper guest reception implies not accepting bribes, and proper use of resources means avoiding waste. These teachings, like the “Eight Articles” (Gyeongmul Chiji, Seonguijeongsim, Susinjega, Chigukpyeongcheonha), are not merely truths but are closer to Providence.

The Concept of “Dori” (Righteous Way) and its Superiority
The “Eight Articles” and the principles of “Mongmin Simseo” are not merely truths or ethics; they represent “Dori,” the righteous way of living. “Dori” is a higher concept than ethics, embodying the principles followed by enlightened individuals. The Korean phrase “Doridori jjakjjakgung,” often associated with children’s play, actually signifies the harmonious alignment of heaven’s will and human will, leading to prosperity. “Dori” is closer to Providence than to truth, rationality, or other lower concepts.

The Hierarchical Structure of Principles
The hierarchy of principles can be visualized as follows:
Providence (섭리)
Heavenly Principle (천리)
Dori (도리)
Truth (진리)
Ethics (윤리)
Rationality (합리)
Law (법리)

Truth, ethics, rationality, and law are all constrained by time and space. However, Dori, Heavenly Principle, and Providence are not. The teachings of Huh Kyung young, such as the “Eight Articles” and “Mongmin Simseo,” fall under Dori, representing a higher dimension of understanding. For instance, an uneducated person cannot achieve peace, nor can a private disrespect a sergeant; these violate human Dori. Dori transcends law and truth.

The Role of Rationality in Interpersonal Relations
Rationality (합리) exists between ethics and law. It addresses situations where strict adherence to ethics might be awkward or impractical. For example, if a younger person is significantly older than an elder, it would be ethically awkward for the elder to address the younger person as “uncle.” In such cases, rationality dictates a flexible approach, adjusting one’s address to suit the situation. This demonstrates the need for rational adaptation in complex social interactions.

1. The Cosmic System of Providence

The entire universe is controlled by a system called Providence . This system applies to humans, but it is often difficult for people to access or understand . Providence is composed of the energies of heaven and earth, forming a comprehensive system .

  1. Distinguishing Providence from Truth
Truth is bound by time and space . For example, what was considered normal in the past, like wearing a topknot, is not seen as normal today . The truth of Judaism in Israel is not necessarily the truth everywhere . Actions acceptable for a child are not acceptable for an adult . Each stage of life has its own truth .

In contrast, Providence is not constrained by time and space . Our destiny is subject to time and space, but our fate is not . For instance, parents remain parents regardless of time or distance . Humans often fail to understand this fundamental difference between truth and Providence .

  1. The Hierarchy of Principles: Providence, Truth, Ethics, and Law
Below truth, there are ethics and law . These, like truth, are also subject to the constraints of time and space . Legal interpretations can vary between courts, and laws change with historical and societal developments .

Providence, however, transcends these changing principles . It is an eternal principle, like the eternal nature of God or the unchanging identity of Jesus . The ultimate truth, unconstrained by time and space, is Providence .

  1. The Interconnectedness of Principles and the Importance of Love
The act of a mother dedicating herself to her child is an example of Providence . If one does not understand Providence, they cannot understand truth. Without understanding truth, they cannot understand ethics. Without understanding ethics, they become entangled in legal issues .

Understanding all these concepts comprehensively is called “Tongseop” (통섭), meaning “holistic integration” . This holistic understanding is often impossible for ordinary people .

The principle of “love humanity” is not a matter of truth or law; it is Providence . It is a divine command .

  1. The Role of Providence in Human Judgment
Consider a student who injures a teacher. If judged solely by ethics and law, the student would face imprisonment . However, a perspective rooted in Providence would seek to understand the underlying causes, such as the student’s upbringing and lack of parental love .

Many young people today suffer from anger control issues . This is a consequence of rapid economic development, which has led to a hurried and competitive society, eroding human character .

From the perspective of a Holiest, the fault lies with the parents and teachers for failing to provide proper education and love . Just as a robot’s malfunction is the owner’s responsibility, a child’s misbehavior reflects the failures of those who raised them .

If the teacher, instead of seeking legal recourse, expresses understanding and forgiveness, acknowledging their own shortcomings in education, then ethics and law become unnecessary . Such an act of forgiveness, rooted in Providence, can transform a student’s life, leading to future success and gratitude .

  1. The Supremacy of Providence
Ethics, law, and truth cannot overcome Providence . Providence dictates that we should not blame others . All responsibility should be taken by oneself, recognizing oneself as the cause of all problems . This wisdom, rooted in Providence, leads to success regardless of one’s circumstances .

Even judges, bound by legal principles, should strive to incorporate Providence into their judgments . Applying only strict legal principles can ruin a young person’s life . Ignoring Providence has severe consequences for society .

  1. The Limitations of Religious Law and the Wisdom of Ancient Sages
Religious laws, like the Mosaic Law, are often mistaken for Providence . However, such laws can be restrictive and even harmful, as they prioritize rules over human well-being . Jesus challenged these laws, asserting that laws exist for humanity, not the other way around . Laws that enslave people, rather than serving them, lack the essence of Providence .

Ancient Korean sages, like Jeong Yak-yong, understood principles close to Providence. His “Mongmin Yuksseo” (목민육서), a guide for public officials, outlines six essential attitudes for humans :
Chigung (치궁): Proper bodily conduct, self-discipline .
Cheongsim (청심): Pure-heartedness, proper mental attitude .
Jega (제가): Proper family life, managing one’s household .
Byeonggaek (병객): Proper hospitality, treating guests honorably without accepting bribes .
Jeonyong (전용): Proper use of resources, avoiding waste .
Naksi (낚시): Proper giving, sharing generously with others .

These principles, though rooted in Confucianism, transcend mere ethics or law; they are closer to Providence . Similarly, the Eight Articles of Self-Cultivation (경물치지, 성의정심, 수신제가, 치국평천하) – investigating things, making intentions sincere, rectifying the mind, cultivating the self, regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world – are also principles of “Dori” (도리), which is closer to Providence than truth .

  1. The Seven Levels of Principles
There are seven levels of principles in the world :
    Providence (섭리)
    Heavenly Principle (천리)
Dori (도리) (human conduct and reason)
    Truth (진리)
    Ethics (윤리)
    Rationality (합리)
    Law (법리)

Truth, ethics, rationality, and law are all subject to the constraints of time and space . However, Dori, Heavenly Principle, and Providence are not . Dori represents a higher dimension of human conduct, transcending mere legal or ethical compliance .

Rationality exists between ethics and law . It is applied in situations where strict adherence to ethics or law might be inappropriate, such as when addressing a younger relative who is technically an elder . In such cases, a rational adjustment is made to maintain harmony .

Ultimately, the highest principle is Providence, which encompasses love and universal responsibility

(Providence)
(Heaven-Earth-Human Trinity)
진리 (Contextual Truth)
운명 (Predetermined Fate)
(Eternal Destiny)
(Ethical Principles)
법리 (Legal Interpretation)
(Consilience)
율법 (Dogmatic Law)
(Self-Discipline)
청심 (Purity of Mind)
제가 (Family Governance)
병객 (Guest Etiquette)
전용 (Resource Stewardship)
(Benevolent Giving)
(Investigation of Things and Extension of Knowledge)
(Sincerity of Will and Rectification of Mind)
(Self-Cultivation and Family Regulation)
(Governance of the State and Bringing Peace to the World)
도리 (Fundamental Principle)
천리 (Heavenly Principle)
합리 (Rationality)

  5. Central Questions & Answers
Central Question 1: What is the relationship between Providence, the divine, and humans? Is Providence above humans, or is it created for humans?
Answer 1: Providence is a system that controls the entire universe, applying to humans as “cosmic Providence.” Humans find it difficult to access Providence directly. Providence is eternal and unchanging, unlike human-made truths, ethics, and laws.

Central Question 2: What is the difference between Providence, Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principles?
Answer 2: Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principles are all constrained by time and space, changing with historical and societal contexts. Providence, however, is eternal and transcends these constraints, representing unchanging divine commands like “love humans.”

  1. Conclusion & Strategic / Philosophical Implications
The lecture concludes by asserting that prioritizing lower-level principles like Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principles without understanding Providence leads to societal decay and failure. The ultimate message is to embrace love and take personal responsibility, aligning with Providence, which transcends all other principles. This implies that true wisdom and societal well-being come from a holistic understanding and application of these principles, with Providence at the apex, guiding all human actions and systems. Ignoring Providence leads to a “suffocating” society where individuals are trapped by rigid rules.

  2. Cross-Referencing
Other works/lectures by the same speaker: The speaker mentions that he is the only one who can give lectures on the “Unified Field Theory” (통일장이론), implying this concept is part of his broader teachings.
Related theories, books, or research: The lecture references Jeong Yak-yong’s “Mongmin Yugseo” (목민육서) and its six principles, as well as the “8 Jo-mok” (8조목) of self-cultivation and governance (e.g., Gyeongmul Chiji, Seonguijeongsim, Susinjega, Chigu, Pyeongcheonha), which are foundational concepts in East Asian philosophy.
Historical parallels or precedents: The discussion of Jesus challenging Jewish Law (율법) serves as a historical parallel to the idea of prioritizing higher principles (love/Providence) over rigid, lower-level rules.

  3. Multilingual Translation Strategy
To produce reliable translations, a multi-stage workflow is recommended:
Initial Machine Translation: Use advanced AI translation tools (e.g., DeepL, Google Translate) to generate a raw English transcript from the Korean audio.
Human Post-Editing (Korean Expert): A native Korean speaker with expertise in the speaker’s specific terminology and philosophical concepts should review and correct the machine translation against the original Korean audio, ensuring accuracy of proper nouns (e.g., “Huh Kyung Young”), technical terms, and nuanced meanings. This step is crucial for capturing the speaker’s unique vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
Human Post-Editing (English Native Speaker): An English native speaker, preferably with some understanding of philosophical or spiritual discourse, should then refine the corrected English text for natural flow, grammatical correctness, and idiomatic expression, ensuring it reads professionally and clearly to an English-speaking audience.
Glossary Development: Create a glossary of key terms (e.g., 섭리, 진리, 윤리, 법리, 도리, 통섭) with their precise definitions and preferred English equivalents to maintain consistency across all translations.
Iterative Review: For other major languages, repeat steps 1-3, using the refined English version as an intermediate reference, and ensuring that the glossary is applied consistently.

  4. Content Gaps & Unaddressed Areas
Practical Application of Providence: While Providence is defined as the highest principle, the lecture does not provide concrete, actionable steps for individuals or institutions to directly “apply” Providence in daily decision-making beyond general concepts of love and self-responsibility.
Mechanism of “Adjustment”: The speaker mentions adjusting and modifying Providence in real-time , but the lecture does not elaborate on how this adjustment occurs or what its implications are.
Relationship between “Heavenly Principle” and “Providence”: The lecture introduces “Heavenly Principle” (천리) as a distinct stage but then states that Providence “replaces” it , leaving the exact relationship somewhat ambiguous.
Specific Examples of “Consilience”: While “Consilience” (통섭) is presented as crucial, the lecture lacks detailed examples of how it would be achieved or manifested in complex real-world scenarios, especially for “ordinary people” for whom it is deemed “impossible.”
Addressing Systemic Issues: The lecture attributes societal problems to individuals’ failure to grasp Providence and emphasizes personal responsibility. However, it does not deeply explore how systemic issues (e.g., economic structures, political systems) might hinder or facilitate the application of these principles.

  5. Future Predictions & Prophetic Statements
Societal Decline: The speaker predicts that if people continue to adhere only to Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principles without understanding Providence, “the world will continue to get worse.”
Failure of Education and Nation: The speaker states that the current educational system is failing, and the nation is going astray because educators do not teach about Providence and self-responsibility.

Executive Insight
This lecture by Huh Kyung Young presents a compelling hierarchical framework of principles, positioning “Providence” as the supreme, eternal, and unconstrained guiding force, above “Principle/Moral Duty,” “Truth,” “Ethics,” “Rationality,” and “Legal Principles.” The core takeaway is that modern societal ills, from anger control disorder to educational failures, stem from an over-reliance on lower-tier, time-and-space-bound rules, neglecting the foundational principle of love and self-responsibility inherent in Providence. For professionals, this implies a critical need to transcend rigid, rule-based thinking and cultivate a holistic perspective that prioritizes universal, unchanging values. True leadership and problem-solving, according to Huh Kyung Young, require “Consilience”—an integrated understanding that places human well-being and love at the forefront, even when it challenges conventional legal or ethical norms.

The Characteristics of Humans Acting on a Providential Level

  1. The Cosmic Order: Providence (攝理) and Its Relationship with Humanity
Huh Kyung-young explains that Providence (攝理, seop-ri) is the fundamental system controlling the entire universe. It is the cosmic order that governs all existence, including humanity. Humans, however, find it challenging to access or fully comprehend Providence. Providence is distinct from truth (眞理, jin-ri), ethics (倫理, yun-ri), and legal principles (法理, beop-ri).

  2. Distinguishing Providence (攝理) from Truth (眞理)
Truth (眞理) is bound by time and space. For example, ancient customs, like wearing a topknot, were considered normal in their time but would be seen as abnormal today. Similarly, the truth of Judaism in Israel is not universally applicable. Actions considered acceptable for a child are not for an adult, demonstrating how truth changes with age and context. Therefore, truth is subject to the constraints of time and space.

In contrast, Providence (攝理) is not bound by time and space. Our individual destinies (運命, un-myeong) are constrained by time and space, but our fundamental fate (宿命, suk-myeong), such as the eternal relationship with our parents, remains unchanged regardless of time or location. This illustrates that Providence transcends temporal and spatial limitations.

  1. The Hierarchy of Principles: Providence (攝理) at the Apex
Huh Kyung-young outlines a hierarchy of principles: Providence (攝理) stands above all. Below Providence is Heavenly Principle (天理, cheon-ri), followed by Moral Principle (道理, do-ri), Truth (眞理, jin-ri), Ethics (倫理, yun-ri), Rationality (合理, hap-ri), and finally Legal Principle (法理, beop-ri).

Truth, ethics, rationality, and legal principles are all subject to the constraints of time and space. However, Moral Principle (道理) and Providence (攝理) are not.

  1. The Essence of Providence (攝理): Unconditional Love
Providence (攝理) is fundamentally about unconditional love. For instance, a mother’s devotion to her child is a Providence given by heaven. Disregarding Providence leads to ignorance of truth, which in turn leads to ignorance of ethics, and ultimately results in legal transgressions.

Huh Kyung-young emphasizes that the command to “love humanity” is not a truth or a legal principle, but a Providence. He illustrates this with the example of a student assaulting a teacher. While legal and ethical principles would demand punishment, a perspective rooted in Providence would seek to understand the student’s background and the systemic failures that led to their behavior. The teacher, acting from a place of Providence, would forgive the student and take responsibility for their own shortcomings in education. Such an act of forgiveness, though seemingly against conventional justice, can lead to the student’s future success and gratitude.

  1. The Importance of “Tongseop” (統攝): Holistic Understanding
“Tongseop” (統攝), meaning holistic understanding or comprehensive grasp, is essential for comprehending the interconnectedness of Providence, truth, ethics, and legal principles. Without this holistic understanding, individuals cannot truly grasp these concepts.

  2. Historical Examples of Moral Principle (道理) Aligned with Providence (攝理)
Huh Kyung-young references historical figures and their teachings that align with Moral Principle (道理) and, by extension, Providence (攝理).

6.1. Jeong Yak-yong’s (丁若鏞) “Mongmin Yukseo” (牧民六書)
Jeong Yak-yong’s “Mongmin Yukseo” outlines six essential attitudes for public servants:
Chigung (治躬): Proper self-conduct. This involves self-discipline and maintaining an upright physical demeanor.
Cheongsim (淸心): Pure heart. This refers to maintaining a clear and honest mind.
Jega (齊家): Orderly family life. This emphasizes proper management of one’s household.
Byeonggaek (秉客): Proper guest reception. This implies not accepting bribes and treating visitors with integrity.
Jeonyong (錢用): Proper use of resources. This means avoiding waste and using material possessions wisely.
Nakshi (樂施): Proper giving. This refers to righteous generosity and sharing with others.

These principles, though rooted in Confucianism, are closer to Providence (攝理) than to mere truth or ethics, as they represent the highest form of righteous conduct.

6.2. The Eight Virtues (八條目)
The Eight Virtues (八條目) from “Daxue” (大學) also align with Moral Principle (道理) and Providence (攝理):
Gyeongmul Chiji (格物致知): Investigation of things and extension of knowledge.
Seongui Jeongsim (誠意正心): Sincerity of will and rectification of mind.
Susin Jega (修身齊家): Cultivation of self and regulation of family.
Chiguk Pyeongcheonha (治國平天下): Governance of the state and bringing peace to the world.

These eight principles represent the “Dao” (道), or the Way, which is a higher concept than truth and closer to Providence. Moral Principle (道理) is a higher concept than ethics (倫理), representing the fundamental way humans should live. The Korean children’s game “Doridori Jjakjjakung” (도리도리 짝짜꿍) symbolically represents the harmony between heaven’s will and human will, reflecting this concept of Moral Principle.

  1. The Dangers of Legalism: Lessons from Jesus
Huh Kyung-young draws a parallel between the rigid adherence to legal principles and the historical conflict between Jesus and the Jewish law (律法, yul-beop). The law, though divinely ordained, became a burden that stifled human life. For example, the Sabbath law prohibited healing on the holy day, even for emergencies. Jesus challenged this, stating that “man was not made for the Sabbath, but the Sabbath for man,” emphasizing the importance of saving lives over strict adherence to rules. This confrontation ultimately led to Jesus’s death. The law, in this context, became a form of slavery, where people were bound by rules rather than serving human well-being.

  2. The Path to Societal Improvement: Embracing Providence (攝理)
Societies that prioritize truth, ethics, and legal principles without the overarching guidance of Providence (攝理) will continue to decline. True progress requires “Tongseop” (統攝), a holistic understanding that integrates all these principles under Providence. Even within legal systems, judges should strive to incorporate Providence by considering the broader context and individual circumstances, rather than strictly applying legal principles that could ruin a person’s life.

Ultimately, the responsibility for societal problems lies with everyone, not just individuals. When individuals and nations cease blaming others and embrace the wisdom of Providence, they will achieve success. This means recognizing that all causes originate from oneself and acting with love and understanding.

The Hierarchy of Principles: Providence, Reason, Truth, Ethics, and Law

  1. The Cosmic Order: Understanding Providence
Greetings. Today, I shall address the concept of Providence (섭리). As the divine entity, I established the system of Providence, and even now, having descended to Earth, I continuously adjust and refine it through My will and omnipotence. You might wonder about the origin of Providence and My relationship with it. Specifically, you may ask whether humanity was placed above Providence or if Providence was created for humanity. To control the entire universe, Providence is essential. It is the Cosmic Providence (우주 섭리) that applies to humans. However, humans find it difficult to access Providence. Ordinary people do not speak of Providence, do they? Providence consists of the Heavenly Qi (하늘의 기) and the Earthly Qi (땅의 기). No, there are three: Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. This concept of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity (천지인) is embodied in the character seop (섭), meaning “to govern” or “to integrate.”

You might perceive Providence as different from Truth (진리). Indeed, it is. The times of topknots are different from today. If you wore a topknot now, you would not be seen as normal, Maja, an maja? This illustrates that Truth is bound by time (시간) and space (공간). Providence, however, is not. It is unbounded (무양). If something is bound by time and space, it is Truth. The truth of Judaism in Israel is not the truth here, Geureochana? Therefore, their truth is not our truth. Truth is always accompanied by time and space.

Consider this: actions I took as a child are forgiven. As a baby, Geureochana? But if an adult behaves like a baby, are they forgiven? No. That is not Truth. A baby has the truth of a baby, and an adult has the truth of an adult. Thus, Truth is constrained by time and space. This implies that Providence is not constrained by time and space. Our destiny (운명) is constrained by time and space. But our fate (숙명) is not. Why? Because parents remain parents forever, regardless of how much time passes. Even if time passes or they go to North Korea, they do not cease to be my father or mother, Geu-rae, an geu-rae? Humans do not understand the difference between Truth and Providence. They would not know unless I explained it. Now you understand clearly, Al-get-ji? What is Truth? Truth changes according to time and space. It cannot escape this dimension. North Korea can be different from South Korea. China’s customs laws are different from ours, Geureochana? These are all laws, and they constitute Truth.

  1. The Subordinate Principles: Ethics, Reason, and Law
Below Truth, there is Ethics (윤리). Ethics is also bound by time and space. Then there is Legal Principle (법리). The interpretation of laws differs. A person might be innocent in a local court but guilty in a higher court, or vice versa, Geureochana? Legal interpretations vary. So, Ethics and Legal Principle do not merely follow Truth; they exist separately. Ethics follows its own truth. People confuse these. Ethics is subject to the constraints of time and space. Legal Principle is also subject to the constraints of time and space, Al-get-ji? For example, old anti-communist laws cannot be applied properly today. Legal principles change with the flow of history and time. Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principle all change with the flow of history and time.

Providence, however, does not require history or time. God is eternal, and humans are eternally His servants. That is how it is. Jesus remains Jesus for billions of years, Maja, an maja? So Providence does not change. Providence is the Truth that is not constrained by time and space. That is all Providence, Al-get-ji? The Truth not constrained by time and space is Providence. For a mother to dedicate herself to her child after giving birth—that is Providence given by Heaven, Maja, an maja? If one violates this Providence, one will not know Truth. If one does not know Truth, one will not know Ethics. Because one does not know Ethics, one becomes entangled in Legal Principle. Geu-rae, an geu-rae?

To comprehend all of this is called Integration (통섭). You must achieve Integration. But for you, Integration is impossible. That is why only I can lecture on the Unified Field Theory (통일장이론). Maja, an maja? If you ask others, they do not have such concepts. They just talk about Truth and then stop. Maja, an maja? Is there anyone who can properly explain what Truth, Ethics, Legal Principle, and Providence are? No.

  1. The Supremacy of Providence and the Path of Love
What is important here is that these systems—Ethics, Truth, and Legal Principle—which change with the flow of history and time, cannot overcome Providence. They cannot overcome Providence. So, “Love humanity”—is this Truth or Providence? It is Providence. Providence is formidable. Therefore, “Love humanity” is a command from God, so it is Providence. It is not found in law or in Truth, Geu-rae, an geu-rae?

Consider a university student or high school student who hits a teacher and breaks their tooth. If the homeroom teacher applies Ethics and Legal Principle, the student must go to jail, Maja, an maja? They go to jail. That is according to Ethics and Legal Principle. Even if you apply Truth, they must go to jail. If you ask anyone, they would say, “That child must be punished.” But if you ask a priest, “What should I do?” they would say, “Putting them in jail is difficult.” Why is it difficult? They must speak words close to Providence. They would ask, “Does the child have a mother? How did they grow up?” Geu-rae, an geu-rae? “Did the child’s mother neglect them when they were young? Did she always leave them alone after school?” How did the child grow up? Always going to cram school with a key, coming home to no mother, no father, growing up lonely. Geu-rae, an geu-rae?

Even if parents are present, they might not truly be there. The child is told to go to cram school, while the mother goes to work and the father goes to work. When the child returns from cram school, no one is home. So, the parents just drop off and pick up the child like an object. They are merely custodians. So, how did the child grow up? With anger control issues (분노 조절 장애). They cannot control their anger. Currently, 50% of Korea’s population has anger control issues. It is enormous. 10% of the entire population has anger control issues. There is no other country like this in the world. This situation arose because the economy rapidly rose from last place to 10th. It is a situation of being constantly chased. So, children have become strangely twisted. They cannot tolerate things; their fists fly first. They are irritable, Maja, an maja?

In the past, when our parents farmed, things were slow. We saw that slowness in the countryside, peacefully. So, the minds of people from the past were not impatient. But after President Park Chung-hee, people became impatient. With economic development and the drive to live well, human nature was harmed. So, should this child be sent to a judge or to jail? From the perspective of a priest, a pastor, or a divine being like Me, the person who was hit is at fault. The responsibility for poor education lies with the parents and the teacher, Maja, an maja? If a robot harms its owner, whose fault is it? The owner’s fault. We put the wrong AI in the robot. We must input it correctly, Geu-rae, an geu-rae? Should a human AI be put in jail? You understand, Al-get-ji? A defective product was produced. Whose responsibility is the defect? The person who was hit. If we apply Ethics or Legal Principle to a defective product, another criminal emerges.

So, if the teacher, instead of demanding treatment costs for their broken tooth, says, “I am sorry. I educated you wrongly. If I had known you did not receive love from your parents, I would have treated you better. I scolded you carelessly, so you got angry, Geu-rae, an geu-rae?” If the teacher says, “I did not know your circumstances well. Please forgive me,” then Ethics and Law are unnecessary. If that teacher, who forgave the child, meets them decades later, the student might say, “Teacher, do you not recognize me?” The teacher, now old, might say, “Who are you?” The student, who was forgiven after hitting the teacher, might have become successful in society. “Teacher, if you had put me in jail back then, what would have become of me?” They would embrace the teacher, crying and expressing gratitude for their success. See that? This law. Ethics and Legal Principle cannot follow Truth, and Truth cannot follow Providence. Providence is precisely that which should not be governed by time and space.

The wrongdoings of young people are always due to imitating adults. Adults are at fault. So, if you adhere too strictly to Ethics and Legal Principle, children will suffocate. Maja, an maja? For children, I do not say, “Oh, you are doing well, you are pretty.” I approach them gently. That is why I do not respond when anti-fans curse at me. Now you understand, Al-get-ji? So, the path to Providence is love (사랑). Love. Heaven’s will is unconditionally love, self-love (자애). Geu-rae, an geu-rae? This means, do not argue with things like Ethics, Legal Principle, or Truth. All responsibility should be attributed to oneself. Think that there is no one else to blame, Al-get-ji? Think that I am the culprit for all causes. Geureochana? That is Providence. Educators do not even teach this to children now. That is why education fails, and the nation goes wrong. But you understand My words, Geu-rae, an geu-rae?

Therefore, those who integrate Providence, Truth, Ethics, and Legal Principle—these are all Heaven and Earth. Maja, an maja? So, constantly arguing about Ethics, “Why did you do that? Why did you break the law? Why did you go against Truth?”—would that work? No. So, you should not blame others. Al-get-ji? In North Korea, if you do not blame others, you succeed. In South Korea, if you do not blame others, you succeed. It has nothing to do with what Truth is. Maja, an maja? That person will succeed in any country. Why? Because it is the wisdom of considering Providence. Now you understand, Al-get-ji? So, no matter how much you uphold Truth, Ethics, or Legal Principle, the world will continue to worsen. Al-get-ji? Therefore, you must achieve Integration. You must see through the whole. Geureochana?

But what if a judge in court does not judge according to Legal Principle? Their head would be on the line, Geu-rae, an geu-rae? Can they act according to Providence? No. It is difficult. Nevertheless, Legal Principle must, to the maximum extent possible, be governed by Providence. Geu-rae, an geu-rae? “Teacher, you broke a tooth. Are you reflecting?” “Yes, I am reflecting.” “What are you reflecting on?” The judge would ask. If the judge asks, “What are you reflecting on?” they must take that into account. Maja, an maja? Providence must intervene. If you just apply Legal Principle for assault, “You get this much jail time,” you truly ruin the child. Geureochana? So, this society is very frightening. You must not ignore this Providence. Al-get-ji?

  1. The Limitations of Law and the Wisdom of the Sages
So, when I was Jesus in the past, I did not uphold the Law (율법) but went with love. You might think that since God made the Law, it is Providence, but it is not Providence. It is a religious doctrine. It is a legal consultation. This is not right. It is suffocating. Under the Law, you cannot touch an emergency patient on Sunday. That is Judaism, Maja, an maja? But what did Jesus say? “Is man for the Law, or the Law for man?” Geu-rae, an geu-rae? “We must save people.” But because it is Sunday, according to the Law, you cannot touch a patient, you cannot ride a car, Geu-rae, an geu-rae? So, the Law becomes something that traps people. That is why Jesus directly opposed the Law and died, Geu-rae, an geu-rae? Providence is not dissolved in the Law. So, people became slaves to the Law. If a person owns a car but becomes a slave to it, is that right? No, it is not. I should use it when I need it and put it away when I do not. Should I sleep with the car in my room? People become slaves to the Law, unable to move, like buying a car and becoming its slave, Maja, an maja? That can happen.

Therefore, in the Mongmin Simseo (목민심서), the Six Books of Governance (목민육서), Jeong Yak-yong emphasized six principles. The first is Chigung (치궁), meaning “to govern oneself.” The second is Cheongsim (청심), meaning “to purify one’s mind.” The third is Jega (제가), meaning “to manage one’s household.” The fourth is Byeonggaek (병객), meaning “to treat guests properly.” The fifth is Jeonyong (전용), meaning “to use resources properly.” And the sixth is Naksi (낙시), meaning “to give generously.” These six principles, though rooted in Confucianism, require more than just law or ethics. They require the highest and most virtuous approach. Chigung is about proper self-conduct. Cheongsim is about proper mindset. Jega is about proper family life. Byeonggaek is about proper guest reception, meaning not taking bribes. Jeonyong is about using resources wisely, not wasting them. And Naksi is about proper giving to others. These words of Jeong Yak-yong are close to Providence.

I have spoken of the Eight Virtues (8조목): Gyeongmul Chiji (격물치지), Seonguijeongsim (성의정심), Susinjaega (수신제가), Chiguk (치국), and Pyeongcheonha (평천하). These are not merely Truth but are close to Providence. Indeed, there were many great people in the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongmul means to understand things, to gain knowledge. Seongui means to make one’s intentions sincere. Jeongsim means to rectify one’s mind. Susin means to cultivate oneself. Jega means to manage one’s household. Chiguk means to govern the nation. Pyeongcheonha means to bring peace to the world. These eight principles all have a Way (도). This Way is closer to Providence than to Truth. These are all Providence. But people mistakenly call them Truth or Ethics. This is not Ethics; it is Dori (도리), the Way of human conduct. Dori is higher than Ethics. The character do (도) is attached to it. It is the principle followed by sages (도사). The Way of human conduct is higher than Ethics. That is why it is called Dori. The children’s song “Dori-dori Jjak-jjak-kung” (도리도리 짝짜꿍) refers to this Dori. It means Heaven and Earth must come together. The will of Heaven and the will of humanity must come together, “Dori-dori Jjak-jjak-kung,” for us to become a flourishing nation. All of this comes from here. Dori is closer to Providence than to Truth, rationality, or anything else, Maja, an maja?

  1. The Seven Levels of Principles
Let me illustrate this on a piece of paper. Here, we have Providence. Below Providence, there is Dori. Then there is Truth. Then Ethics. Then Rationality (합리). Then Legal Principle. Legal Principle is the lowest. And above Providence, there is Heavenly Principle (천리). Heavenly Principle. Providence takes the place of Heavenly Principle. So, there are seven levels in this world: Heavenly Principle, Providence, Dori, Truth, Ethics, Rationality, and Legal Principle. The position of Truth is not very high, is it? It is in the middle. So, Truth is not everything. Truth is constrained by time and space. Ethics, Rationality, and Legal Principle are also constrained. However, Dori and Providence are not. So, what I have lectured on today is all Dori. It is not Truth. Geu-rae, an geu-rae? It is a higher dimension.

I am now at the 8.5 level. What did I explain before? The Six Books of Governance are also Dori. As humans, we must act this way. Can someone who does not know things or accumulate wisdom bring peace to the world? No. That is not the Dori of a human. Geureochana? Can a private say to a sergeant, “Hey, you bastard!” No. That is not the Dori of a human. Maja, an maja? It is about upholding human Dori more than Truth or Law, Al-get-ji? You understand what I mean, Geu-rae, an geu-rae? So, today, you asked a very important question. Now you know, Al-get-ji?

Let me reiterate the order: Providence, then Heavenly Principle, then Dori, then Truth, then Ethics, then Rationality, then Legal Principle. Rationality is between Ethics and Legal Principle. Al-get-ji? Why is Rationality between Ethics and Legal Principle? Because there might be a younger sibling who is older than me. Geu-rae, an geu-rae? There might be an older uncle. Can that happen? Yes. So, should we apply Ethics? Is it good for an adult to call a child “uncle, uncle”? No. Then what should we do? We must be rational. We add a bit of age to it. Geu-rae, an geu-rae? We must speak differently. It would be strange to call a ten-year-old “uncle.” Maja, an maja? In such cases, you can rationally modify it. Al-get-ji? Geu-reoh-jyo? Jae-mit-jyo?
