Huh Kyung young’s Revolutionary Philosophy: From Self-Interest to Altruism and Eternal Life
This excerpt from an interview with Heo Kyung-young on Hurting#110 delves into his unique philosophy on self-realization, success, and societal contribution. He challenges conventional notions of “self-interest” and “survival of the fittest,” advocating for a “long-term” perspective that prioritizes altruism and eternal life over immediate gains. His insights offer a contrarian view on how individuals and society should operate, emphasizing a mindset shift from “me first” to “others first.”
The Philosophy of Self-Realization
The True Meaning of Self-Realization
Heo Kyung-young argues that true self-realization isn’t about individual achievement in isolation, but about aligning oneself with the greater good. It’s not a philosophical concept to be pondered, but an active, outward-focused behavior.
Living for the benefit of others is self-realization. You understand, right? It’s not about philosophically realizing oneself. This refers to action. Yes, if it becomes “self-benefit for others,” then self-realization occurs.
Beyond “Self-Benefit for Others” to “Others-Benefit First”
Heo Kyung-young introduces a crucial distinction: most people strive for “self-benefit for others” (자리이타), where helping others ultimately serves one’s own interest. However, he asserts that true self-realization comes from “others-benefit first” (이타자리), where the primary motivation is to benefit others, with one’s own well-being being a natural consequence. This is a fundamental shift in perspective.
But you have to do “others-benefit” first for “self-benefit” to happen. This is self-realization.
That’s why it should be called “others-benefit first.” That’s who succeeds. That’s why the 1% or 0.1% of successful people choose this path.
The “Long-Term” Perspective: From Survival to Eternal Life
Heo Kyung-young criticizes the common focus on “survival of the fittest” (적자생존), which he sees as a short-sighted approach. Instead, he advocates for “survival for eternal life” (적자영생), a perspective that considers the long-term, even eternal, implications of one’s actions. This “far-sightedness” (원행지) is key to true success and self-realization.
Yes, but survival happens, not eternal life. Ah, eternal life. Yes, it needs to be eternal life, but what’s missing? “Far-sightedness” is missing.
One who sees eternal life cannot see it if they are preoccupied with immediate gains. That’s why you must have “far-sightedness,” “present-moment awareness,” “immovability,” and “goodwill” to be one who goes to eternal life.
Challenging Conventional Wisdom
Redefining “Giving” and “Charity”
Heo Kyung-young offers a radical reinterpretation of charity, particularly in the context of his free meal service. He doesn’t see it as “giving” his own resources, but rather as “returning what rightfully belongs to others.” This perspective eliminates any sense of pride or self-congratulation, framing it as a simple act of justice.
So, I give 2 billion won a year to those people, the poor, right? But this isn’t giving; it’s their food. I’m just returning it to its rightful place.
Who made those people unable to eat? Who made them go hungry? Wasn’t it the leaders, the social elite? I am merely the one who naturally returns what belongs to them.
The Mindset of True Success
Heo Kyung-young asserts that successful individuals think in opposition to the general public. While others might see his actions as self-serving, he views them as a necessary act of returning what was unjustly held. This contrarian mindset is what sets true leaders apart.
Ah, successful people’s thoughts are the opposite of ordinary people’s, completely opposite. Oh, but ordinary people would say, “Oh, he’s so proud of doing free meals.” But the person actually providing free meals, I think the opposite. “I have to return that to those people; can I hold onto it?”
The Path to a Transformed Society
Revolution of the Mind
Heo Kyung-young defines “revolution” not just as an overthrow of systems, but as a fundamental transformation of the mind. This internal revolution, shifting from “self-benefit for others” to “others-benefit first” and from “survival” to “eternal life,” is what truly brings about profound change.
That itself is a revolution. Ah, that revolution refers to overturning our minds. Yes, it’s not just about overturning systems. Ah, oh, we must revolutionize our minds.
So, “self-benefit for others” becoming “others-benefit first” is a revolution. Ah, a true revolution. Yes. Oh, and another thing is survival changing to eternal life is a revolution.
The Future Society: Beyond Basic Needs
Heo Kyung-young envisions a future where basic needs are met, allowing people to dedicate their time to self-realization and contributing to society. This shift would lead to a society filled with volunteers and donors, with people’s perspectives broadening to encompass not just the visible world, but also the eternal.
If you become president, I think you’ll solve the problems of food, clothing, and shelter. So, where will people in a future society, where these problems are solved, spend most of their time? It’s this. They’ll spend it on self-realization. Ah, on self-realization. In other words, they’ll study things like this. Yes. Uh, and then many volunteers and donors will emerge. Ah, then people’s eyes will change. “Wow, we’ve only looked at what’s in front of us until now.” Yes. We need to see the invisible world too. The eternal world.
The Joy of Reaching the Peak
Heo Kyung-young uses the analogy of climbing a mountain to illustrate the profound satisfaction that comes from persevering to the very end. Those who reach the summit experience a joy that erases all the pain of the journey, making them eager to repeat the experience. This “joy of achievement” is what drives true self-realization and prevents people from giving up.
A person who has climbed to the top of the mountain experiences satisfaction from within. Ah, dopamine, right? Adrenaline also comes out, a sense of accomplishment, uh, a sense of accomplishment emerges, and when I see it, I feel refreshed and my heart opens up. It makes me forget all the pain of climbing, from within.

The Nature of Self and the Pursuit of Self-Realization
The discourse commences with a fundamental inquiry into the nature of the self and the methods by which one can govern it. Huh Kyung young posits that the “self” is akin to an individual holding a spear, perpetually poised for self-defense. This metaphor underscores the inherent drive for self-preservation within human existence. However, the lecture immediately introduces a critical dilemma: while the spear is essential for protection, its excessive use can harm others, yet laying it down risks exploitation. This creates a frequent conflict between the necessity of self-preservation and the potential loss of self. The core question then emerges: Is there a method to protect oneself without resorting to the “spear,” and how can the self be wisely managed? Furthermore, the concept of “revolutionizing oneself,” as previously mentioned by Huh Kyung young, is explored, seeking to define what such a transformation entails.
The human world, in its essence, operates on the principle of “survival of the fittest,” a concept applicable across animals, plants, and humans alike. The self exists primarily for its own survival; without this inherent drive, the self cannot sustain its existence. The ultimate realization of the human self, as articulated by Huh Kyung young, is achieved through “coexistence and co-prosperity.” This signifies that if one’s individual self is not aligned with the collective good, it cannot truly flourish. Individualism, therefore, must be transcended by integrating the self into the broader concept of “public good” to achieve coexistence and co-prosperity. Those who embrace this principle thrive, while those who do not are destined to fail. This is the practical reality of survival of the fittest in the world.
Beyond Self-Interest: The Philosophy of “Ita Jari”
The conventional understanding of self-realization often aligns with individualistic pursuits, yet Huh Kyung young introduces a profound distinction. He asserts that true self-realization is not merely about personal gain but about “Jari Ita,” which translates to “benefiting others for one’s own sake.” However, he immediately refines this concept, stating that the actual principle should be “Ita Jari,” meaning “benefiting oneself for the sake of others.” This subtle yet crucial reversal in terminology carries immense philosophical weight. It implies that one’s actions should prioritize the welfare of others, and through this altruism, one’s own benefit naturally follows. This is not a philosophical enlightenment achieved through abstract thought but a practical, behavioral imperative.
The distinction between “Jari Ita” and “Ita Jari” is paramount. “Jari Ita” suggests that one helps others with an underlying expectation of personal return, such as assisting someone with the implicit question, “How much will I be paid for this?” This approach, while seemingly beneficial, is not true altruism. In contrast, “Ita Jari” dictates that one’s primary motivation is to assist others without immediate consideration of personal gain. It is through this selfless act that one’s own well-being is ultimately secured. This is the true path to self-realization, a method that transcends the mere “survival of the fittest.” The latter, while ensuring immediate existence, does not lead to eternal life. The former, by prioritizing the benefit of others, aligns with a broader, more enduring vision of existence.
The Four Wisdoms and the Path to Eternal Life
True self-realization is intricately linked to a profound shift in perspective, moving beyond immediate gratification to embrace a long-term vision. Huh Kyung young introduces four essential wisdoms that guide this transformation:
Hyunjeonji (현전지): This wisdom entails perceiving all individuals as equal, fostering a sense of universal parity. It transcends superficial differences and recognizes the inherent worth of every being.
Wonhaengji (원행지): This refers to the wisdom of foresight, looking far into the future. While a short-sighted view leads to mere “survival of the fittest,” a long-term perspective encompasses the journey to heaven and hell, and ultimately, death. This broader outlook facilitates genuine self-realization. For instance, a person with Wonhaengji would not immediately consume a piece of rice cake but would consider the baker who prepared it, choosing to repay their kindness rather than satisfy immediate hunger.
Budongji (부동지): This wisdom signifies unwavering steadfastness in the face of temptation and worldly distractions. Those who have achieved self-realization remain unswayed by fleeting pleasures like alcohol or tobacco, maintaining their focus on higher values. Their ultimate value lies in the heavens, and anything that deviates from this celestial alignment is rejected.
Chakal Seonja (차칼 선자): This embodies the practice of benevolence and compassion towards others. It involves extending mercy and kindness, acting from a place of genuine goodwill.
These four wisdoms collectively define a truly realized self, one that transcends the narrow confines of “survival of the fittest” and embraces “coexistence and co-prosperity.” The pursuit of eternal life necessitates these wisdoms. Those who are fixated on immediate gains cannot perceive the path to eternal life. Therefore, cultivating Wonhaengji, Hyunjeonji, Budongji, and Seonuiji (선우이지 – the will to do good) is crucial for attaining eternal existence.
Rejecting Worldly Attachments for a Higher Purpose
Individuals who envision eternal life perceive worldly possessions and fleeting pleasures as ultimately meaningless. They harbor no lingering attachments to material wealth or temporary comforts. For example, purchasing a luxurious car, while providing immediate satisfaction, does not offer eternal value. A person with foresight would not demand such a car from their parents but would instead focus on diligent study, understanding that long-term effort can lead to greater opportunities, perhaps even receiving a fine car as a gift from a future father-in-law.
However, an even deeper level of foresight involves refusing such gifts. A truly far-sighted individual would decline a car from a father-in-law, suggesting instead that the money be used for the father-in-law’s own well-being or donated to those in need. This is because giving to one’s own family is not considered true charity; true benevolence lies in assisting unknown, less fortunate individuals. Such an act demonstrates a profound understanding of long-term value and a rejection of immediate, self-serving benefits. Conversely, a son-in-law who demands a car or apartment from his wealthy in-laws is seen as someone who will ultimately bring ruin to the family, as they are not focused on eternal life but on immediate gratification. The truly enlightened individual practices “Ita Jari,” prioritizing the well-being of others, even to the point of refusing personal gifts and instead offering gratitude for the gift of their spouse. This demonstrates a profound sense of self-respect and a commitment to a higher moral standard, earning the deep respect and trust of their in-laws. Such individuals are rare and embody true self-realization.
The Deception of “Jari Ita” and the Truth of “Ita Jari”
The common understanding of “Jari Ita” (benefiting others for one’s own sake) is often a facade, a form of hypocrisy. Many who advocate for “Jari Ita” are, in fact, driven by self-interest. The true principle, as emphasized by Huh Kyung young, is “Ita Jari” (benefiting oneself for the sake of others). This distinction is fundamental and represents a complete paradigm shift. For instance, a person who marries into a wealthy family and then complains about not receiving an apartment or car from their in-laws demonstrates a lack of “Wonhaengji” (foresight). Such an individual is focused on immediate, personal gain rather than a long-term, altruistic perspective.
A truly enlightened individual, when offered an apartment or car by their in-laws, would respectfully decline, stating that the gift of their spouse is already a profound blessing, and they should instead be the ones to show gratitude and provide for their in-laws. This act of refusal, driven by a deep sense of self-respect and a commitment to “Ita Jari,” demonstrates a far-sighted vision. Such a person is not merely seeking personal comfort but is focused on eternal values and the well-being of the entire family. This kind of individual, who rejects what they are entitled to for the sake of a greater good, embodies the wisdom of “Wonhaengji” and is truly a “far-sighted” person. They understand that true success and lasting happiness come not from taking, but from giving and prioritizing the welfare of others.
The Revolution of the Mind: From Survival to Eternal Life
True self-realization, as taught by Huh Kyung young, is not a superficial concept but a profound transformation of one’s inner being. It involves transcending the ego and embracing a perspective that extends to eternal life. This means looking beyond immediate personal gain and considering the long-term implications of one’s actions, even into the afterlife. The concept of “Jari Ita” (benefiting others for one’s own sake), while seemingly virtuous, is ultimately a short-sighted approach. The true path is “Ita Jari” (benefiting oneself for the sake of others), where the welfare of others is prioritized, and one’s own benefit naturally follows. This is a fundamental shift in mindset, a “revolution of the mind.”
This revolution involves moving from a focus on “survival of the fittest” to “eternal life.” When viewed from the perspective of eternal life, mere survival appears trivial and childish. The current societal structure, where some thrive while others starve, is a testament to the dominance of “survival of the fittest.” However, true human existence, as envisioned by Huh Kyung young, should be based on “coexistence and co-prosperity,” where no one goes hungry. The very existence of elderly individuals needing free meals indicates a flawed society and a failure of leadership. Those in positions of power have a responsibility to ensure equitable distribution, rather than hoarding resources. Releasing these resources for the benefit of all is the essence of “Ita Jari.”
The True Meaning of Charity: Returning What is Rightfully Theirs
The concept of charity, particularly in the context of providing free meals, is often misunderstood. Huh Kyung young asserts that when he provides free meals to the impoverished, he is not “giving” something that is his, but rather “returning” what rightfully belongs to them. The food, in essence, is not his property but belongs to those who are hungry. This perspective challenges the conventional notion of benevolence, suggesting that true altruism involves recognizing the inherent rights of others and rectifying societal imbalances.
He illustrates this with several examples:
Food for the Hungry: Food, by its very nature, belongs to those who are hungry. Those who are full and consume excessively risk health problems like diabetes. Therefore, providing food to the hungry is not an act of charity but an act of returning what is theirs.
Care for Parents: Caring for parents, both one’s own and others’, is not a selfless act of giving but a recognition of their inherent right to care and sustenance.
Children’s Blessings: When mothers worry about feeding many children, the traditional wisdom suggests that each child brings their own blessings and sustenance. The mother merely facilitates this, acting as an intermediary rather than the sole provider.
This profound shift in perspective—viewing acts of charity not as giving but as returning—is a hallmark of those who are truly successful and far-sighted. While ordinary people might perceive such acts as self-aggrandizement, those who practice “Ita Jari” understand that they are merely fulfilling a moral obligation, returning what has been unjustly withheld. This mindset is crucial for genuine self-realization and for fostering a society based on true coexistence and co-prosperity.
The Revolutionary Mindset: Beyond Reform to Transformation
The concept of “revolutionizing oneself” is not merely about superficial changes or reforms; it is about a fundamental transformation of one’s entire being, particularly one’s mindset. Huh Kyung young emphasizes that true revolution extends beyond political or institutional changes to encompass a profound shift in individual consciousness. This “revolution of the mind” is the ultimate goal, leading to immense societal impact.
Key aspects of this revolutionary mindset include:
From “Jari Ita” to “Ita Jari”: The transformation from benefiting others for one’s own sake to benefiting oneself for the sake of others is a revolutionary act. It signifies a complete reversal of priorities, moving from self-centeredness to altruism.
From Survival to Eternal Life: Shifting one’s focus from mere physical survival to the pursuit of eternal life is another revolutionary change. This involves considering the long-term trajectory of humanity and the planet, rather than short-term gains. A true leader, for instance, would not merely focus on their term in office but on ensuring the eternal prosperity of the nation.
The Five Wisdoms (Wonhaengji): Embracing the wisdom of foresight, which includes looking far into the future and considering eternal existence, is integral to this revolution. This comprehensive perspective, encompassing the “five wisdoms” (though only four were explicitly detailed earlier), forms the bedrock of a revolutionary mind.
This revolution is not about tearing down existing systems but about transforming the internal landscape of individuals. When such a revolution of the mind occurs, it unleashes an extraordinary potential for positive change. It is about fostering a mindset that prioritizes the collective good and eternal values, ensuring the sustained well-being of humanity.
The Future Society: A Focus on Self-Realization and Eternal Vision
In a future society where basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter are universally met, individuals will dedicate their time and energy to self-realization. This will manifest in a heightened pursuit of knowledge, an increase in volunteerism, and a surge in charitable giving. People’s perspectives will shift dramatically, moving beyond immediate concerns to embrace a broader, eternal vision. They will look beyond the “blue sky” to the “dark space” and the “white space,” encompassing the entire galaxy, recognizing that life extends beyond the confines of Earth. This eternal perspective will redefine suffering, making worldly pains seem insignificant.
The analogy of climbing a mountain illustrates this point:
The Summit Experience: Those who reach the mountain summit experience a profound sense of satisfaction, a rush of dopamine and adrenaline, and a clear, expansive view that erases the memory of the arduous climb. This joy and achievement motivate them to climb again, despite the physical challenges.
The Incomplete Journey: Those who turn back halfway, unable to reach the summit, retain only the memory of pain and difficulty. They are less likely to attempt the climb again, as the joy of achievement eludes them.
Similarly, a woman who endures the pain of childbirth but holds her beautiful baby forgets the suffering and is willing to have more children. However, a woman who experiences a miscarriage, without the joy of seeing her child, may be hesitant to become pregnant again. The brain, in its wisdom, erases the memory of pain when a greater joy is experienced, reinforcing the desire for that joy.
This principle applies to all aspects of life, including academic pursuits and personal goals. Those who persevere to achieve their goals, like gaining admission to a prestigious university, find that the struggles of studying are erased by the immense joy of success. Conversely, those who repeatedly fail experience only continuous suffering. Therefore, it is crucial to set high, distant goals, aiming for the “summit” of eternal life. This long-term vision, coupled with the joy of achievement, empowers individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue a life of profound meaning and fulfillment.
1. The Essence of Self-Realization: Beyond Self-Preservation
The concept of the self is often misunderstood. Holiest Huh Kyung-young explains that the self, in its most basic form, is like holding a spear to protect oneself . This instinct for self-preservation is fundamental to survival in a world governed by the principle of survival of the fittest . However, while essential for individual existence, an excessive focus on self-preservation can lead to harming others, while neglecting it can result in exploitation . The true challenge lies in wisely managing this self.
Survival of the Fittest (적자생존): This principle, applicable to animals, plants, and humans alike, dictates that only the strongest or most adaptable survive .
In human society, this translates to businesses closing if they don’t sell, or individuals struggling if they cannot compete .
The Self’s Purpose: The self exists for its own survival . Without this inherent drive, the self cannot exist .
The Conflict: Humans frequently face a dilemma: how to protect themselves without harming others, and how to avoid being exploited if they lay down their defenses .
- The Path to Self-Realization: Public Benefit and Coexistence
True self-realization transcends mere individual survival. Holiest Huh Kyung-young emphasizes that human self-realization is ultimately achieved through coexistence and co-prosperity (공전공영) . This means aligning one’s individual self with the greater public good .
Coexistence and Co-prosperity (공전공영): This is the ultimate form of self-realization for humanity .
It means that individuals thrive when they contribute to the well-being of all .
Those who embrace this principle flourish, while those who do not, falter .
Beyond Individualism: Moving beyond coexistence and co-prosperity leads to selfishness (이기주의) .
Self-Realization as Altruism: Self-realization is fundamentally about benefiting oneself by benefiting others (자리이타) .
It is not a philosophical enlightenment but an active behavior .
When one lives for the benefit of others, self-realization naturally occurs .
- The Distinction Between Self-Benefit and Altruism: A Paradigm Shift
There is a crucial distinction between benefiting oneself by benefiting others (자리이타) and benefiting others first, which then benefits oneself (이타자리) . While seemingly similar, their order of priority fundamentally alters the outcome.
Benefiting Oneself by Benefiting Others (자리이타): This approach prioritizes one’s own gain, even if it involves helping others.
For example, offering help with the expectation of a salary is not true altruism .
This is often driven by the desire for personal survival .
Benefiting Others First, Then Oneself (이타자리): This is the higher form, where the primary motivation is to help others, and personal benefit follows naturally .
This is the true method of self-realization .
It is a different approach to survival of the fittest .
The act of helping others becomes the means by which one helps oneself .
The Subtle Difference: While the words may seem similar, the underlying intention and order of action are vastly different .
Helping others to help oneself is not true self-realization .
When one helps others, one unknowingly finds a way to survive and thrive .
This subtle reversal of perspective is profoundly important .
- Qualities of a Self-Realized Individual: Foresight and Steadfastness
A truly self-realized individual possesses specific qualities that enable them to transcend immediate concerns and embrace a broader, more profound existence. These qualities include far-sightedness, equanimity, steadfastness, and benevolence .
Equanimity (현전지): This involves seeing all people as equal .
Far-Sightedness (원행지): This means looking far into the future, beyond immediate gains .
Focusing only on the near future leads to mere survival of the fittest .
Looking far ahead, considering the afterlife and eternal existence, leads to self-realization .
A far-sighted person might forgo immediate gratification, like eating a piece of bread, if they know someone else needs it more .
Steadfastness (부동지): Such individuals are unwavering in their commitment to the right path of truth .
They are centered on the principle of benefiting others first .
Their values are aligned with the heavens, making them immune to worldly temptations like alcohol or fleeting pleasures .
Benevolence (선해지): They are characterized by their compassion and willingness to bestow kindness upon others .
Beyond Survival: Self-realization is not just about survival of the fittest; it requires coexistence and co-prosperity .
These qualities—equanimity, far-sightedness, steadfastness, and benevolence—are the pillars of coexistence and co-prosperity .
- The Ultimate Goal: Eternal Life and True Revolution
The ultimate goal is not just survival of the fittest (적자생존) but eternal life (적자영생) . This shift in perspective from immediate survival to eternal existence is what constitutes a true revolution .
Survival vs. Eternal Life:
Most people prioritize immediate survival, which they mistakenly equate with goodness .
However, true goodness lies in coexistence and co-prosperity .
Benefiting oneself by benefiting others (자리이타) is good, but it is not the absolute good .
The absolute good is benefiting others first, then oneself (이타자리) .
Those who prioritize helping others will never starve .
Far-Sightedness and Eternal Life:
Far-sighted individuals see the long-term, which includes eternal life .
Immediate gains distract from the pursuit of eternal life .
Possessing far-sightedness, equanimity, steadfastness, and benevolence is essential for those seeking eternal life .
Detachment from Worldly Possessions: Those who envision eternal life find worldly possessions meaningless .
They understand that material things are temporary .
Instead of seeking immediate gratification, they focus on long-term growth and contribution .
The Example of Refusing Gifts: A truly far-sighted individual would even refuse generous gifts, encouraging the giver to use their resources for broader societal benefit .
This demonstrates a profound understanding that true value lies beyond personal acquisition .
Such an act inspires respect and trust, leading to greater long-term benefits .
Self-Esteem and Self-Realization: Self-realization is the realization of one’s self-esteem (자존) .
It means truly letting go of the self and looking towards eternal life .
The Heavenly Law: The principle of benefiting others first, then oneself (이타자리) is a heavenly law .
While benefiting oneself by benefiting others (자리이타) is a human strategy, benefiting others first aligns with divine providence .
Revolution of the Mind: A true revolution (혁명) is not just about changing systems but about transforming one’s mind .
It is the shift from benefiting oneself by benefiting others to benefiting others first, then oneself .
It is also the transformation from focusing on survival to pursuing eternal life .
This mental revolution leads to profound positive changes .
Leaders should consider the eternal history of their nation, not just short-term gains .
- The Mindset of True Giving: Recognizing Inherent Ownership
The act of giving, particularly to those in need, should not be seen as a charitable act but as a recognition of inherent ownership . This profound shift in perspective is central to true self-realization.
The True Owner of Food: When providing food to the hungry, it is not “giving” one’s own food; rather, it is returning what rightfully belongs to them .
The hungry person is the rightful owner of the food .
To claim it as one’s own and “give” it is a misunderstanding of true altruism .
Food for the Hungry: Food, by its nature, belongs to those who are hungry .
Eating excessively when not hungry can lead to illness, while the hungry suffer .
Therefore, food is inherently for the hungry .
No Guilt in Giving: Those who provide free meals should not feel a sense of pride or charity, but rather a sense of returning what was always meant for others .
It is not one’s own money or resources being given, but rather the rightful property of the recipients .
Children’s Blessings: Similarly, when parents raise children, they are not solely responsible for providing for them; children bring their own blessings and sustenance .
Parents merely facilitate this, acting as intermediaries .
This perspective allows for a broader, more eternal view of life .
Leaders’ Responsibility: The existence of hungry elderly people in society indicates a failure of leadership .
Leaders have a responsibility to ensure resources are distributed equitably .
Hoarding resources is akin to holding stolen goods; true altruism means releasing them .
The Holiest’s Perspective: Holiest Huh Kyung-young states that his extensive charitable work, such as providing free meals, is not an act of giving but of returning what rightfully belongs to others .
He sees the money that comes to him as not his own, but as something to be quickly distributed to those in need .
This mindset is the opposite of how ordinary people perceive charity .
It is a painful realization to hold onto what should belong to others .
- The Joy of Reaching the Summit: Overcoming Hardship for Eternal Fulfillment
The journey of self-realization, like climbing a mountain, involves hardship, but the ultimate reward of reaching the summit and experiencing the joy of eternal fulfillment erases all past suffering . This profound satisfaction motivates continued pursuit of higher goals.
The Mountain Analogy:
Those who reach the mountain peak experience a deep sense of satisfaction and joy, forgetting the pain of the climb .
This is similar to a mother forgetting the pain of childbirth when she sees her beautiful baby .
The joy of the outcome outweighs the suffering of the process .
Motivation for Future Endeavors:
Having experienced the summit’s joy, individuals are motivated to climb again, despite the difficulty .
Conversely, those who turn back midway, without experiencing the peak’s reward, only remember the pain and are reluctant to try again .
The memory of joy makes the next climb feel less arduous .
Erasing Painful Memories: The mind has a remarkable ability to erase the memory of suffering when a greater joy is achieved .
It replaces the pain with the happiness and beauty of the accomplishment .
This allows individuals to face future challenges without fear .
True Joy and Detachment: Those who have experienced the profound joy of understanding the heavenly will and eternal life find worldly pleasures insignificant .
They are not swayed by fleeting emotions of happiness, anger, sorrow, or joy because they possess a deeper, truer happiness .
The Importance of High Goals: To achieve true success and fulfillment, one must always set high ideals and goals .
Settling for partial success or giving up midway prevents the experience of true joy and leaves only the memory of hardship .
Achieving a significant goal, like gaining admission to a prestigious university, erases all the past struggles of studying
The Path to Self-Realization and Eternal Life
-
The Essence of Self-Realization: From Self-Interest to Altruism
Huh Kyung-young explains that the concept of “self” (自我) in this human world is fundamentally rooted in the survival of the fittest (適者生存). The self exists for its own survival; without it, the self cannot exist. However, human self-realization (自我實現) transcends mere individual survival. It involves aligning one’s self with the common good (公) to achieve co-existence (共存) and co-prosperity (共榮). This is the ultimate form of human self-realization. Those who embrace this principle thrive, while those who do not, perish. -
The Distinction Between Self-Benefit and Altruism
The world operates on the principle of the survival of the fittest. Businesses that fail to sell close down. However, for humans, true self-realization moves beyond this. It is not about egoism (利己主義) but about benefiting others (利他). Self-realization is achieved when one lives for the benefit of others (為他利). This is not a philosophical realization but an action. When one acts for the benefit of others, self-realization occurs.
However, there is a crucial distinction. The common understanding of “benefiting oneself by benefiting others” (自利利他) is often misguided. The correct approach is “benefiting others first, then oneself” (利他自利). If one helps others with the expectation of personal gain, it is not true altruism. True self-realization means prioritizing the benefit of others, which then naturally leads to one’s own well-being. This is the method of eternal life (永生), distinct from mere survival of the fittest.
- The Five Wisdoms for Self-Realization
Huh Kyung-young outlines five wisdoms essential for self-realization:
Universal Vision Wisdom (現前智): This involves seeing all people as equal.
Far-Reaching Wisdom (遠行智): One must look beyond immediate gains and consider the distant future, including the afterlife. Those who focus only on the present are caught in the survival of the fittest. Those who look far ahead, considering heaven and hell, achieve self-realization.
Immovable Wisdom (不動智): Individuals who have achieved self-realization are unwavering in their commitment to the right path, particularly in prioritizing altruism. Their values are rooted in the heavens, making them immune to worldly temptations like alcohol, tobacco, or sensual pleasures.
Benevolent Wisdom (慈善智): This is characterized by acts of compassion and charity towards others.
Co-existence and Co-prosperity (共存共榮): This is the ultimate goal, where self-realization is not just about individual survival but about the collective well-being.
-
The Superiority of Altruism (利他自利) over Self-Benefit (自利利他)
While the survival of the fittest (適者生存) is a reality, true human progress lies in co-existence and co-prosperity (共存共榮), which is achieved through altruism (利他自利). Prioritizing the benefit of others naturally brings benefit to oneself. Conversely, acting for one’s own benefit with the intention of helping others is a lesser form. The 0.1% of successful individuals choose altruism, while the foolish pursue self-benefit. -
From Survival to Eternal Life (永生)
Survival (生存) ensures existence but not eternal life (永生). To achieve eternal life, one must possess far-reaching wisdom (遠行智). While immediate survival is often pressing, true aspiration should be for eternal life, a life in the eternal heavens. Those who seek eternal life view worldly possessions as fleeting and meaningless. They do not cling to temporary gains. Therefore, one must cultivate far-reaching wisdom, universal vision wisdom, immovable wisdom, and benevolent wisdom to attain eternal life. -
The Wisdom of Refusal and Long-Term Vision
A person with far-reaching wisdom understands that immediate benefits are often superficial. For example, a son-in-law who refuses a car or apartment from his wealthy in-laws, instead suggesting they use their money for themselves or donate it to those in need, demonstrates true long-term vision. Such an act of refusal, driven by a deeper understanding of value, deeply impresses the in-laws. This is because giving to family is not true charity; true charity is helping unknown, unfortunate people. This kind of person is not focused on the survival of the fittest but on eternal life, embodying altruism. -
The True Meaning of Self-Realization
Self-realization (自我實現) is not about proclaiming “self-benefit and altruism” (自利利他), which can be a form of hypocrisy. It is about “altruism first, then self-benefit” (利他自利). This is a profound difference. Self-realization means transcending the self and looking towards eternal life. It means not being swayed by immediate desires or benefits. A person who rejects what they are entitled to, like a wealthy son-in-law refusing gifts, is a person of far-reaching wisdom. Self-realization is the realization of one’s self-esteem (自尊). -
The Divine Law of Altruism
There is no need to fear losing oneself or to feel victimized when acting altruistically. It is a divine law (하늘의 법칙) that self-benefit follows altruism. Human “self-benefit and altruism” is merely a human means; “altruism first, then self-benefit” aligns with divine providence. -
The True Nature of Charity and Ownership
When one performs acts of charity, such as providing free meals, it is not truly “giving” but rather “returning” what rightfully belongs to others. The hungry are the true owners of the food. To claim that one is “giving” is a misunderstanding of altruism. Similarly, children bring their own blessings, and parents are merely facilitators. This perspective, which sees things from an eternal viewpoint, is crucial for true self-realization. -
The Revolutionary Mindset
The concept of self-realization is profound. Those who truly understand it, like Huh Kyung-young, engage in extensive charity not out of a sense of giving, but out of a recognition that the wealth they possess is not truly theirs; it belongs to those in need. They are merely returning what was taken. This revolutionary mindset, which sees the hungry as victims of societal imbalance, is the mark of a truly successful individual. -
The Revolution of the Mind
Huh Kyung-young emphasizes that true revolution (革命) is not merely about changing systems but about transforming the mind. It is the shift from “self-benefit and altruism” to “altruism first, then self-benefit.” It is also the transformation from focusing on mere survival to aspiring for eternal life. A leader who plans for the eternal prosperity of the nation, rather than just their term, embodies this revolutionary spirit. This far-reaching vision (遠行智) is the essence of revolution. -
The Future Society and Self-Realization
In a future society where basic needs (의식주) are met, people will dedicate their time to self-realization. This will lead to an increase in volunteers and donors, and people’s perspectives will change. They will look beyond the immediate and visible world, towards the eternal and unseen realms. This shift in focus from earthly life to eternal life alleviates worldly suffering.
Just as a climber who reaches the summit experiences a profound sense of satisfaction that erases the pain of the ascent, those who achieve self-realization experience a joy that transcends all worldly suffering. This deep satisfaction encourages them to continue striving for higher goals. Conversely, those who give up midway only remember the pain. Therefore, one’s ideals and goals must always be set high, at the summit, to experience true success and joy.

(The Essence of Self and Survival of the Fittest)
(Altruistic Contribution and Self-Realization)
(Long-Term Vision for Eternal Life)
(Practicing Altruistic Contribution and Eternal Life)
(Attitude Towards Life for Eternal Life)
(True Self-Realization and Revolution)
(Heaven’s Law and Altruistic Contribution)
(The Essence of Revolution and Eternal Life)
(Life After Basic Needs are Met)
(Joy Beyond Suffering and Eternal Life)

True self-realization is achieved through “altruism first” (이타자리), not “self-interest first” (자리이타).
“Survival of the fittest” (적자생존) is a short-sighted approach; “eternal life” (영생) requires a long-term perspective.
A “revolution” (혁명) involves transforming one’s mindset from self-interest to altruism and from survival to eternal life.
Giving to the poor should be seen as returning what rightfully belongs to them, not as an act of charity.

Historical & Epochal Context
The lecture is situated in a contemporary societal context where individualism and “survival of the fittest” are prevalent, leading to a focus on immediate gains and personal benefit. The speaker critiques this mindset, advocating for a shift towards “coexistence and co-prosperity” (공전공영) and a long-term vision that includes “eternal life” (영생), suggesting a need for a fundamental change in human values and societal structure. -

Core Concept Definitions
자아 (Self): Described as holding a spear for self-preservation.
(Survival of the fittest): The principle where the strong survive, applicable to animals, plants, and humans.

(Survival for eternal life): The ultimate goal, where survival is not just for the present but for eternal existence.
(Revolution): A fundamental change in mindset, from self-interest to altruism, and from survival to eternal life. -
Central Questions & Answers
Central Question: How can one wisely control their self (자아) and protect themselves without resorting to aggression, and what does “self-realization” truly mean?
Speaker’s Main Answer:
True self-realization involves prioritizing “altruism first” (이타자리) over “self-interest first” (자리이타). This means living for the benefit of others, which naturally leads to one’s own well-being. It also requires a “far-sighted” (원행지) perspective, focusing on “eternal life” (영생) rather than just immediate “survival” (생존). This shift in mindset constitutes a true “revolution” (혁명).
-
Conclusion & Strategic / Philosophical Implications
The lecture concludes by emphasizing that true self-realization and societal success stem from a fundamental shift in perspective: from immediate survival to eternal life, and from self-interest to altruism. This “mind revolution” (마음의 혁명) means viewing acts of charity not as giving, but as returning what rightfully belongs to others. The philosophical implication is that genuine happiness and fulfillment come from aligning oneself with universal principles of coexistence and co-prosperity, transcending ego-driven actions and embracing a long-term, collective vision. This leads to a society where basic needs are met, allowing individuals to focus on higher pursuits like self-realization and service. -
Cross-Referencing
Other works/lectures by the same speaker: The speaker references his past lectures where he described the “self” as holding a spear and advocating for evolution. He also mentions his 30-year-old advocacy for having children, linking it to the nation’s eternal continuation.
Related theories: The concept of “survival of the fittest” (적자생존) is explicitly mentioned and contrasted with the speaker’s proposed “coexistence and co-prosperity” (공전공영) and “survival for eternal life” (적자영생). -
Multilingual Translation Strategy
To produce reliable English versions and other major languages, a multi-stage workflow is recommended:
Initial Machine Translation: Use a high-quality neural machine translation (NMT) engine (e.g., DeepL, Google Translate) to generate a first-pass translation of the Korean transcript.
Human Post-Editing (HPE) by Domain Expert: A professional translator with expertise in philosophical/spiritual discourse and familiar with Huh Kyung-young’s unique terminology should review and refine the NMT output. This step is crucial for correcting inaccuracies, ensuring cultural nuances are preserved, and accurately translating specific concepts like “이타자리” and “원행지.”
Back-Translation (Optional but Recommended): For critical sections, back-translate the English version into Korean by a separate translator. Comparing this back-translation with the original Korean can highlight areas where meaning might have been lost or distorted.
Native Speaker Review: A native English speaker (or target language native speaker) with strong editing skills should review the final translation for natural flow, grammatical correctness, and idiomatic expression.
Glossary Development: Create and maintain a glossary of key terms (e.g., 자아, 영생, 이타자리, 원행지, 혁명) with their approved translations and contextual explanations to ensure consistency across all translated materials.
Speaker Review (if possible): If feasible, have Huh Kyung-young or his authorized representatives review the translated content to ensure it accurately reflects his intended message and tone. -
Content Gaps & Unaddressed Areas
Practical Implementation of “Altruism First”: While the concept of “altruism first” (이타자리) is heavily emphasized, the lecture provides limited concrete, actionable steps or frameworks for individuals to consistently apply this principle in their daily lives beyond anecdotal examples.
Addressing Systemic Barriers: The lecture attributes societal problems like poverty (e.g., elderly needing free meals) to “leaders” and “social elites” , but it doesn’t delve into specific systemic changes or policies required to dismantle these barriers and foster a “coexistence and co-prosperity” (공전공영) society.
Reconciling “Self-Preservation” with “Altruism First”: The initial metaphor of the “self” holding a spear for self-preservation is not fully reconciled with the ultimate call for “altruism first.” A deeper explanation of how these seemingly conflicting instincts can coexist or be transformed would strengthen the argument.
Evidence for “Eternal Life”: The concept of “eternal life” (영생) is presented as a fundamental goal, but the lecture does not offer any empirical or philosophical evidence for its existence or how one can definitively achieve it, beyond the speaker’s assertion.
Critique of “Individualism”: While “individualism” (개인주의) is briefly mentioned , a more thorough critique of its societal impact and how it hinders the transition to “coexistence and co-prosperity” would provide a more comprehensive argument. -
Future Predictions & Prophetic Statements
Future Society with Solved Basic Needs: The speaker predicts that when he becomes president and solves basic needs (food, clothing, shelter), people in that future society will dedicate most of their time to “self-realization” (자아실현), leading to an increase in volunteers and donors.
Shift in Human Perception: In this future society, people’s perspectives will change, realizing they have been too focused on immediate concerns and will begin to look at “unseen worlds” and “eternal worlds.”
Nation’s Eternal Continuation: The speaker’s past advocacy for having children was based on the prediction that it is essential for the “eternal continuation of the nation.”
Executive Insight
This lecture by Huh Kyung-young offers a profound redefinition of self-realization, shifting the paradigm from ego-centric survival to altruistic eternalism. The core takeaway is that genuine fulfillment and societal progress are achieved not by prioritizing “self-interest first” (자리이타) or mere “survival of the fittest” (적자생존), but by embracing “altruism first” (이타자리) and a “far-sighted” (원행지) vision focused on “eternal life” (영생). This requires a “mind revolution” (마음의 혁명) where acts of giving are perceived as returning what rightfully belongs to others, fostering a society of “coexistence and co-prosperity” (공전공영). For professionals, this implies that true leadership and lasting success stem from a selfless, long-term perspective that benefits the collective, ultimately leading to deeper personal satisfaction and societal harmony.

Achieving a significant goal, like gaining admission to a prestigious university, erases all the past struggles of studying .
